President's Message

Happy fall everyone!

The 2016 PWX was held in Minneapolis with excellent speakers, great attendance, and an impressive equipment show.  Eleven Kentucky APWA members attended as well as several special guests.  Our Chapter dinner was held at the Nicollet Island Inn which is located in the middle of the Mississippi River.  We were happy to host four guests from Finland at the Chapter dinner.  Thank you to Leo McMillen for arranging the dinner.

Mark Adams, with Central Branch, arranged a Segway tour for the group.  The tour included the historical mill section of Minneapolis and provided great information about the vast park system along the Mississippi River. Photos from the event can be found below.

Mark your calendar!  The 2016 APWA State Conference is scheduled for November 3 at the Four Points by Sheraton in Lexington.  The state roadeo will be held on the same day in the Four Points parking lot.  Additional information is included in this enews.  We appreciate your assistance in sharing this information with other public works offices and maintenance facilities in Kentucky that may not receive our enews.

I would like to welcome Keith Pugh as our new Region III Director.  Keith is from High Point, North Carolina.  In addition, I would like to congratulate our former Region III Director, Bo Mills, who is now the APWA President-Elect.

I look forward to seeing everyone on November 3 in Lexington for the State Conference!

Duane Campbell

July 7, 2016
Logan's Roadhouse, Lexington
(Minutes pending approval by board.)

Meeting was called to order by President Duane Campbell at 12:40 PM Eastern.

Brian Van Norman from National APWA attended the meeting and discussed the outreach opportunities that National has to offer the Kentucky Chapter and Branches.  The group also discussed the change in National going to the July to June fiscal year and that Chapter will only need to submit an annual report. Mr. Van Norman offered his assistance to all the Chapter and Branches as needed to help with the outreach as well.

Treasure’s Report: Duane Campbell presented the Treasure’s report in Rick Storm’s absence. The Chapter finances are in pretty good shape at this time.  The Treasures Report will be filed.

Old Business:

  • Region III and Region IV Rogers Clark Leadership Conference, Chattanooga, TN April 7 & 8. Duane Campbell, Robert Bruce, Joe Schepers and Martha Horseman attended.
  • New Executive Director – Scott Grayson, former associate Managing Director for the Institute of Electronic Engineers, Inc., Washington D. C.

Branch News

Central Branch

The Central Branch Annual Golf Scramble was held on August 26 at Weissinger Hills in Shelbyville.  In addition to lunch, golf participants were also able to gain continuing education credits thanks to Forterra, formerly Sherman-Dixie, who was the lunch sponsor.

First place was won by the AECOM team which included Travis Thompson, Darrell Smith, Brian Meade and Mitch Thomas.

A big thank you to everyone who came out and attended the event as well as our many sponsors.

Northern Branch

The Northern Branch was busy in August planning their annual golf outing which took place on Friday, September 9 at Boone Links Golf Course.  All proceeds from the event go towards the Robert Krohman Scholarship Fund.

The Northern Branch will hold their next meeting on November 10.

Southern Branch

The Southern Branch last met on July 13 at Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro.  Discussion continued on starting a scholarship program and the potential for hosting a branch roadeo this fall.

The next branch meeting is scheduled for September 14 at Patti's 1800's Settlement in Grand Rivers.  A tour of the reconstructed Kentucky Lake lock and dam is schedule for after the meeting.
