Signatory and Member Update

Annual Reporting Results 2012

The APC Secretariat has put together a summary of the annual reporting results of all signatories to provide a benchmark for your company's performance compared to the average.

The PDF document is available on our website.

This information will also be available in the APC Annual Report which will be published in December 2012.

Starting to prepare your Annual Report for 2013?

The APC is in the process of finalising updates to last year’s reporting template.  Access to the reporting template will be made available to all signatories in early February.

To improve reporting efficiencies it may be beneficial to begin collating data relevant to progress against the actions you have committed to implementing in the lead up to February.  Don't forget to read the APC’s Audit Ready Guide to ensure your organisation is prepared for auditing.

The APC will be developing and releasing a range of further guides and resources in the lead up to the reporting period to assist all signatories.

Events

Action Plan Development Workshops

Since the end of November the APC has been holding action plan development workshops in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.  Melbourne workshops are scheduled for next week. With more than 300 registered attendees, each workshop has been designed to provide signatories with an improved understanding of what is required to develop, revise and action a ‘beyond compliance’ APC action plan as well as affording the opportunity to discuss and workshop issues with like-minded businesses.

Workshop attendees are encouraged to reflect on their organisation’s place in the supply chain and the relationships they have with various stakeholders.  The management of these relationships is critical to developing their APC action plans and ultimately, the management of packaging sustainability underpinned by the collaborative nature of the APC.  The workshops are being facilitated by Banarra, whose APC action plan methodology has been well received by attendees.  It provides signatories with a platform to not only address their APC commitments, but identify opportunities to improve implementation by working with suppliers, customers, consumers and industry peers. In addition to the improved plan development methodology, the peer learning  nature of the workshops fosters a collaborative, story sharing element that is critical to the success of the APC.

For those signatories that are unable to attend the workshops we will be making the resources presented, in addition to a range of other relevant resources, available via the APC website

National Recycling Week

Last week the Australian Packaging Covenant joined Planet Ark to celebrate National Recycling Week as a supporting sponsor.

The APC kicked off recycling week at the launch of new recycling systems at selected KFC restaurants throughout New South Wales. KFC is the first quick service restaurant to participate in the national recycling initiative, Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin, funded and supported by the Australian Packaging Covenant, Closed Loop Recycling and the Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum.

New recycling systems have been installed at 59 KFC restaurants in NSW for public use, providing away-from-home recycling opportunities for an estimated 30 million customer visits each year.

During National Recycling Week, Planet Ark also launched report about recycling in Australia titled 'Second Nature'. To read the report visit Planet Ark's Recycling Week website.

National Recycling Week is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved to increase recycling rates by everyone working together – industry, government and consumers – and how we can continue to collaborate and build on these achievements.

Household retailer’s packaging can be turned into furniture

We’ve already seen Dutch stroller manufacturer Joolz print instructions on the packaging of its products to encourage customers to turn the used boxes into something new and useful. Now, borrowing a page from Joolz’s book, Australian furniture retailer DIY Living does something similar with its own boxes, allowing buyers to turn the cardboard packaging into brand-new items.
