GO Rwanda 2014

In the July school holidays, 2 teams of students and staff visited Rwanda and Uganda as part of our Global Opportunities program. This week we will be highlighting the team that visited Rwanda, and next week will share highlights from the GO Uganda team.

The GO Rwanda team this year was comprised of 10 students and 8 adults, spending 2 weeks in Rwanda’s Northern Province. The structure of the program is to work primarily in local schools, with a focus on building English literacy skills and running workshops about entrepreneurial thinking, work ethic, and innovation. The students on team rose to every challenge they faced, demonstrating great leadership and resilience.

Parent Involvement Training Workshops

Any parent wishing to participate in activities at the school must first attend a Parent Involvement Training Workshop. Workshops last for approximately 30 minutes and cover WHS issues, privacy legislation, Child Protection legislation and working with staff and students.

Upcoming dates:
Monday 1 September, 9.30am
Monday 1 September, 6.30pm

Register via this form (meet at Reception)

To help prepare for the workshop:

To finalise and fast track our volunteer requirements we would appreciate if you could complete the following prior to attending:

  1. Please email an ID photo (head and shoulders) that we can use on your ID card to Lisa Knight: lknight@nbcs.nsw.edu.au
  2. Visit the Working With Children Check site and apply as a volunteer. This will also involve visiting a local Motor Registry to show your ID. Please also email the approval number and your Date of Birth once this process has been completed.

Parent Helpers for Showcase

Showcase 2014 will be held in just under 2 weeks, on Monday 25 August from 4-7pm.

This event is an important one for our community as it provides our students with an opportunity to exhibit and talk about their learning. It is also important as it provides an opportunity for us to raise the profile and funds for our GO Program.

We are looking for some parent volunteers who will support Northern Beaches Christian School’s GO Program fundraising, by assisting with manning our BBQ in shifts of half an hour or more. If you have completed your parent volunteer training with us and are willing to be rostered onto a BBQ shift, could you please send your details to Lisa Knight at lknight@nbcs.nsw.edu.au.

All help is appreciated.

Reminder: Food Allergies (Primary & Secondary)

Parents/Guardians should be aware that a number of students have significant, and in some instances, life threatening, allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) to food substances. These include nuts, nut products, eggs and dairy products.

Parents can assist by choosing to not include peanut butter, Nutella, nuts or eggs in children’s lunches, in particular.

The Five Love Languages for Children

by Gary Chapman

This book revolutionised how I viewed each of my children, and still does now even as they enter into adulthood. As you know, each child is different and expresses and received love uniquely. In order to most effectively show your love to your child it is important to fully understand them as individuals.
