Requirements for Management of Controlled Substances in Laboratories

Controlled substances are a subset of drugs that are regulated under a federal law, the Controlled Substances Act. In general, the principal investigator of every laboratory using controlled substances must hold a registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Any individual in a laboratory who handles any quantity of controlled substances must undergo a background screening process administered through Human Resources.

University guidelines provide information about the procurement, storage, and dispensing of controlled substances in accordance with the Controlled Substances Act. Answers to frequently asked questions are also available.

Contact the IACUC Office for answers to questions about the use of controlled substances in animal research.
