Dr Linda Martindale and Dr Linda McSwiggan (both School of Nursing & Health Sciences) were awarded the Honorary Graduates' Award for Inclusive Practice thanks to their 'novel' idea to help first year nursing students understand healthcare environments and conditions. 

In response to student demand for prepatory reading, Linda and Linda created a reading list of novels in which the stories centre around health issues, including The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Me Before You. The project, entitled ASK4Books, will be integrated into the undergraduate module Academic Skills and Knowledge (ASK), and will help students to prepare for their initial placements during Semester 1 by exploring topics like euthanasia, dementia, loss, and learning disability through discussion. 

ASK4Books was piloted in May this year and there are plans for a full roll-out in September. It's potentially relevant for any professional programme so if you'd like to get your students involved, get in touch with CASTLE.

The University's Employer’s Liability insurance has been renewed, effective Monday 1 August 2016. The new Certificate can be downloaded online.

A record-breaking number of students graduated from our Summer Schools on Thursday 21 July.

First launched in 1993, these are a key part of the University's leading efforts to widen access to higher education. Having completed the Dundee University Access to Learning (DUAL) and OSS Access courses, 170 students graduated last week.

The University's expertise in midwifery helped bring international experts together for a World Health Organisation (WHO) meeting, aiming to ensure mothers and babies across the globe receive the highest care standards.

The meeting was held in the Tower Building on Mon 25/Tue 26 July, and was opened by Shona Robison, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport. Other visitors included UNICEF and Save the Children as well as donors, aid organisations, universities and health services from across the world.

The meeting was hosted by Dundee in recognition of the important work of the Mother and Infant Research Unit, led by Professor Mary Renfrew.

The first ever open day at the Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre was held on Saturday 2 July, and was a great success. The Centre had more than 80 visitors throughout the day, most of whom stayed for a couple of hours to take part in the talks and tours. In addition, almost 50 staff members turned up to show their support. If you missed it, there are hopes for another event in the future as the feedback has been so positive.

The Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre is based at the School of Medicine on Ninewells campus.
