Most Cases of Erectile Dysfunction Go Untreated, According to Study
Most men in America with erectile dysfunction (ED) aren't treated for it, American researchers say.
It is estimated that 18 million men in the United States have ED, the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sex.
The researchers analyzed data from over 6 million men. They found that only about a quarter of men filled a prescription for ED medication during a one-year period. (Other types of ED treatments, such as vacuum erection devices and penile implants were not considered for this study.)
More details on this study, including the types of medications used and possible reasons for the low treatment rate, are available here.
Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer
When a man has prostate cancer, he and his healthcare team have a number of decisions to make, especially concerning treatment. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is one option.
Androgens are male hormones, like testosterone. They are important for a man's health, but they can also spur the growth of prostate cancer.
ADT can work in one of two ways: it either limits the amount of androgens produced by the body or prevents androgens from acting on prostate cancer cells.
In our latest blog post, we go over the basics of ADT. We also look at some recent research that suggests ADT might not be helpful for men with localized prostate cancer. Click here to learn more.
