1. Avian influenza in Ukraine prompts precautionary EU ban

Ukraine has said that the EU has banned exports of its poultry meat in light of the discovery of H5N8 in the country, while outbreaks have also been reported in the Czech republic and Hungary.

2. China’s ASF outlook remains bleak for 2020

A decimated breeding herd, continued outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) and lack of adherence to containment efforts suggest there’s little hope for a rebound in China’s pork production in 2020, and Germany increases biosecurity with ASF at the border.

3. China moves to restrict Coronavirus spread

A new human coronavirus (a group of viruses that cause common colds but also include SARS and MERS-CoV) has been identified this month in China, and travel restrictions have been widened in Hubei province - the centre of the outbreak - as the death toll climbed to 26. To date the World Health Organisation do not recommend any additional travel restrictions around the globe.

4. Report finds US meat recalls have increased by 65 percent since 2013

US PIRG Education Fund, authors of the report, have called for food safety agencies to take greater control in order to ensure the safety of consumers in the US.
