Webversion COMPETENCE IN PAPER NewsletterSeptember 2020 From the officeDear ZELLCHEMING members and friends, Since July 1, Susanne Haase has been working freelance as Project Manager Communication & Media for ZELLCHEMING. For many years, she has accompanied the development of the paper and pulp industry with great commitment as a reporter and editor-in-chief of various German and English language magazines and has also been advising ZELLCHEMING for several years on the content of the lecture program. Her first tasks included, among other things, drawing up a communication plan, revising the communication instruments, further developing the corporate design and fine-tuning the mission statement, which had already been developed in advance in the course of workshops. Contemporary and effective internal and external communication is one of the things that determine the success of a company or organization today. We have significantly strengthened our position in this area, also with a view to the ZELLCHEMING-Expo, for which we will again be responsible in the coming year, and are pleased to have Ms. Haase on board! New ZELLCHEMING mission statementVarious committees have been involved in the creation of the mission statement since the beginning of the year. It has now been internally coordinated and is to provide the framework for all further communication measures. From Society & IndustryStudy estimates 1.3 B/t of plastic in the environment by 2040According to a recent study by the British University of Leeds, an estimated 1.3 billion tons of plastic could end up in the environment by 2040 if no measures are taken to prevent this from happening. The study and the calculation model were published in a report in the journal Science. The steps called for by the researchers include: reducing the growth in plastics production and consumption; substituting paper and compostable materials for plastics; incorporating the recyclability of products and packaging at the design stage; increasing waste collection rates in middle/low income countries; and supporting the "informal collection sector". But even if "all feasible measures" were taken, the model showed that 710 million additional tons of plastic waste would be released into the environment over the next two decades. Germany paves the way for a ban on disposable plastic productsThe German Federal Cabinet has launched a regulation to ban disposable plastic products. In future, the sale and use of certain products for which environmentally friendly alternatives are available will be banned. Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze described the cabinet decision as an important national step in the fight against the flood of plastics. She expressed her conviction that this ban will soon lead to better, innovative and environmentally friendly products and solutions. The new regulation, which still has to be submitted to the Bundestag and Bundesrat, serves to implement the corresponding EU directive into national law. The ban is to come into force throughout Europe on July 3, 2021. From the membershipSource: TietoEVRY TietoEVRY and Yazzoom promote use of artificial intelligence in the pulp, paper and fiber industryZELLCHEMING company member Yazzoom has extensive experience in the application of artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced analysis of machine data and production processes with references from the pulp and paper industry. TietoEVRY employs more than 1,000 experts from the pulp and paper industry worldwide. By combining the expertise of both companies, TietoEVRY can jointly improve customers' operational processes. "We look forward to expanding the use of our AI-based data analysis software and services in the pulp and paper industry to help the industry create value from its process and MES data. We welcome the cooperation with TietoEVRY, whose extensive experience in this industry and software solutions enable us to jointly develop an integrated solution that covers all aspects, from data access and machine learning applications to reporting on the impact on relevant performance indicators," says Jan Verhasselt, Managing Director of Yazzoom. A warm welcome! The company DEFOTEC Entschäumer Vertriebs-GmbH is a new member of the association since August 2020. Markus Doerk and Erol Akyel represent the company in the association. For the special cleaning of industrial plants, for example in the paper industry, DEFOTEC has developed special industrial cleaners under the name DEFOCLEAN, which not only prevent the accumulation of bacterial strains, but are also compatible - both with the chemical composition of the processes - as well as in the factories' wastewater treatment plants. Model factory paper comes to DürenThe city of Düren will be the site of the Modellfabrik Papier, one of the most ambitious joint projects currently underway in the German paper industry. The Modellfabrik Papier will be supported by a consortium of 14 companies from the paper and supply industry and scientifically by the Technical University of Darmstadt and PTS and will focus on pre-competitive basic research for CO2-free paper production. There, research will be carried out on a pilot plant scale to find out how - also through disruptive approaches - energy-intensive paper production can be made climate-neutral in the long term. From the technical committeesDue to the COVID-19 conditioned editions no presence meetings of the technical committees could take place in the last months. The technical committees PBTC (cardboard and board production) and DATA (pulp and paper testing) will therefore hold their next meetings virtually. At the moment, the conditions are being created to hold the video conferences under the umbrella of the ZELLCHEMING association. Already at the beginning of the year the digital infrastructure of the office was converted to Office 365 and since then Microsoft teams are used intensively. From the networkFounded in 1956 in Paris as a professional “non-profit- making organisation”, EUCEPA comprises 11 national technical associations of the pulp and paper industry in 12 European countries, the members of which are scientists, engineers, and technologists working in this and closely related industries “Forest Industry Cluster”. The aim of EUCEPA is to provide a network for mutual co-operation and support between member Associations in the furtherance of their individual objectives. EUCEPA promote international co-operation among its member Associations and must only undertake those tasks which the member Associations themselves cannot perform alone. Wherever possible member associations co-ordinate the schedule of events in Europe and work together and/or with others to stage events of relevant interest. Petra Hanke meets regularly with the leaders of the European associations that form EUCEPA to exchange and network with international organizations and to promote the exchange of ideas in all these areas. In times of significant change, it is important for each organization to review its position so that it can adapt to the changes it is undergoing and, if necessary, even take advantage of them. The basis for the reorientation was the revision of the website. The new homepage has been active since autumn last year. An important task is to support young professionals in the industry beyond the borders. The ‘EUCEPA Student Grant’ is intended to assist young people (such as students, apprentices and trainees) involved in the field of pulp & paper manufacture and related industries sectors to develop a greater understanding of the European pulp, paper & fibrous forest products industries and to assist in the early development of a network of International contacts. The intended purpose of the EUCEPA grant is to support attendance annual meetings, conferences, fairs and trade shows organized or sponsored by member associations represented in EUCEPA for the purpose of further training in the field of pulp and paper production. I wish you nice late summer days and stay healthy! Yours sincerely, Petra Hanke You can object to the delivery of our newsletter at any time. Please click on the "Unsubscribe" button.
