Dear Friends,

You’re receiving this email because you believe in the transformative power of a VSC residency, and in the importance of creating funded opportunities for working artists and writers. We know this because when we reached out to you last fall to help create the #GivingTuesday Alumni Fellowship, you responded with generosity. In fact, thanks to you and the rest of our #GivingTuesday alumni donors, we were able to award not just one but TWO month-long #GivingTuesday Alumni Fellowships--one each to a writer and to a visual artist!

During her 2009 VSC residency, fiction writer Lania Knight finished her first book, Three Cubic Feet, which went on to be a 2012 Finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Debut Fiction; this summer, she’ll be returning with the goal of finishing her second novel, Remnant.

Jessica Maffia is a New York-based painter whose work "seeks the poetry in the mundane"--most recently via a series of photorealistic pencil drawings of decay, cracks, and residue on walls (like El Alvio, above). She has been exhibiting her work throughout the US since 2009, including shows at Materials for the Arts in Queens, the AIR Gallery in Dumbo, and the Denise Bibro Fine Art Gallery. She may be on the brink of going in a new direction in her work and is looking forward to returning to VSC to explore new possibilities.

Both Lania and Jessica are thrilled to have another chance to experience the magic of VSC, and plan to use their residencies to push their work further and make new connections.

It’s the Vermont Studio Center's goal to nurture as many creative voices and visions as possible through our residency program, and a crucial part of that is the continued expansion of our fellowship funding. But in order to grow our support for artists and writers, we need your help--and as #GivingTuesday has shown, the more generously you give, the more generously we can give back.

If each person receiving this email agrees to pledge $5/month, it would sustain this pair of alumni fellowships annually in perpetuity!

As a special thank you for your support, if you make a contribution of any size before June 15th, we’ll enter you into a raffle for one of these prizes:

  • A gift of any size will enter you into a raffle for a batch of Chef Mark’s decadent brownies.

  • A sustaining gift of $5+/month (or a one-time gift of $60+) will enter you into a raffle for one of 5 steel bottle openers, handmade at the Schultz Sculpture Studio by our sculpture tech, Harlan Mack.

  • A sustaining gift of $15+/month (or a one-time gift of $180+) will give you a chance at a print from our incredible VSC Press collection

  • A sustaining gift of $35+/month (or a one-time gift of $420+) will enter you into a raffle for a one-of-a-kind chef’s knife made especially for VSC by local bladesmith Nick Anger, with a handle carved from locally harvested maple.
