Kennedy prides itself on the outstanding extra-curricular programs on offer and it was wonderful to experience these opportunities firsthand in the second last week of Term 1. Our Year 8 and 11 camps offered great opportunities for students to be challenged through a range of activities and provided a fantastic environment to form new friendships. Year 11 camp was structured for students to reflect on their transition to Senior School and set goals for the future. I hope these experiences were appreciated by all students involved. Semester ExaminationsThis term promises to be a challenging one for everyone as the end of Semester One approaches and assessments have a major impact on final grades. With examinations scheduled for Years 9-12 in June, it is important to review the reason for such assessments at Kennedy. All assessments provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate their achievement so that teachers can review academic progress. The use of assessments as a diagnostic tool is vitally important to staff as strategies are implemented in response to student performance. This may be in the form of support through additional instruction, tutoring, or intensive remediation. It may also include extension or enrichment if this need has been identified. Examinations provide a great opportunity to review the semester’s achievement and provide this analytic data. A reminder to our Year 11 and 12 students about the importance of examinations:
I trust everyone has a fulfilling and rewarding Term 2 at Kennedy. Mr Mark Ashby Chaplain DevotionI want to spend a few moments to set the tone for our Term 2 newsletter devotions by looking at what Jesus encourages us to do in Matthew 6:33 to “seek the kingdom of God first”. When we do the action of “seeking His Kingdom first”, Jesus attaches a promise to add to us every other needed thing to our lives. Some of the power of Jesus’ life was that He viewed this world from a very different perspective than every person born, and raised in, a limited earth-view of life. Jesus had an unrestricted vision of life from a Kingdom of God perspective. That meant that Jesus saw life as eternal. He saw the activities and efforts of life that were not driven by eternal motivations as a distraction to the true purpose of being alive. Jesus saw ‘alive’ as not just having a heartbeat but living with purpose. When Jesus called His listeners to “seek first the Kingdom of God”, He was calling them to not spend their energies of life on just getting food on the table and clothes on their backs. He was letting them know that they are designed to set their hearts on an eternal purpose, and to spend their lives living in the reality that, there is a Kingdom of God behind the veil of earthly life. It’s hard for us to see God’s Kingdom when it’s behind all that we actually look at. Food is very important, today! Clothes, safety, pain and wants are so forceful, and we feel compelled to ‘live’ for those things. But, if we ask God to show us His kingdom, and we then set our faces, hearts, emotions, mind, and strength to live in that reality—God promises to provide all our needs. “Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it” Hebrews 11:1 Kennedy NewsTerm 1 Final AssemblyOur College came together on Wednesday 31 March for the final Assembly of Term 1. Mr Ashby opened the Assembly by celebrating the many events held so far this year. He also talked about the importance of student behaviour and that when students are out in public their behaviour still reflects the College. Badges were presented to our Year 7 Councilors and House Captains for 2021 and we acknowledged the hard work and commitment of the Year 11/7 Mentors. Mr Wood then shared about the excitement and achievements of our recent Swimming Carnivals and students were celebrated for their outstanding swimming results. It was a lovely way to finish off the term. Click here for photos. Term 2 AssemblyMr Ashby set the theme for yesterday’s Assembly by stressing the importance of celebrating student achievements and committing to Kennedy standards. Students excelling in the areas of positive contributions to the Kennedy community, College representation, good academic standing and student leadership, were then awarded their Kennedy Colours. We also reflected on ANZAC Day and heard the story of Pilot Officer Rawden Middleton, who was a bomber pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force and posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, he was awarded the highest gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. The Assembly concluded with a beautiful prayer from our College Chaplain. Click here to see more photos.
