BURGER KING FULL TRANSPARENCY Burger King continues its transparency message by listing their ingredients on Whopper wrappers. The Moldy Whopper campaign captured the public’s attention and so the brand wants to share more with their consumers. The real-food message highlights the brand’s commitment to natural, fresh ingredients while it phases out of artificial colours, flavours, preservatives, MSG and high fructose corn syrup. Burger King’s goal is for 100% natural menu by the beginning of 2021. 2. ZIZZI PIZZA AT HOMEZizzi is partnering with Sainsbury’s to launch their first ever frozen pizza range. Three of the restaurant’s signature pizzas will be available on shelves from 13th September. The selection includes Piccante Pepperoni, Margherita Classic and Vegan Jackfruit. All pizzas will be made with the same restaurant-quality ingredients and is the next retail push after the brand previously trialled an in-store pizza counter with Sainsbury’s in 2017. 3. SUBWAY GERMANY MEATLESS TERIYAKISubway Germany is the latest region to launch the meatless version of its signature Chicken Teriyaki sub. The Meatless Chicken Teriyaki comes in response to the growing plant-based trend following the product’s successful launch in France. A recent survey in Subway restaurants revealed 98% of respondents were enthusiastic about the taste of the Meatless Chicken Teriyaki while 97% would top their sub with the vegan cheese again. 4. HERE COMES THE AVOCADO SHOWThe Avocado Show announced the signing of 19 new franchise locations across the UK and Europe. The expansion will kick off with the opening of a brand-new restaurant in Madrid by the end of October. Founded by Ron Simpson and Julien Zaal, and already with restaurants in Amsterdam and Brussels, The Avocado Show is known for its signature healthy food dishes which are visually stunning and made with sustainably sourced avocados. Menus items include a variety of colourful salads, stuffed sweet potatoes, poke bowls, sandwiches, burgers and a Purple Pizza made on a baked beetroot base. 5. WHAT'S NEW IN FROZEN FOODCOVID-19 has helped reinvigorate the frozen food aisle with new innovations such as plant-based pizzas, casserole bites and cheese filled pretzels. From busy parents, to students and young professionals, consumers are craving familiar and convenient food offerings they can easily make at home. The Cinnabon brand has launched a new range of sweet and savoury breakfast items in line with this frozen trend. Some of their new offerings include jalapeno cheddar sausage bites, CinnaBiscuit chicken sandwich and a CheddarRoll sausage and egg sandwich. 6. CHICK-FIL-A ADDS PIMENTOAmerican fast-food chain, Chick-fil-A, is trialling a new version of its well-known Chicken Sandwich, this time featuring Pimento cheese. Pimento cheese has long been admired for its unique blend of creamy and spicy flavour and texture. The new sandwich, called the Honey Pepper Pimento Chicken Sandwich, is being trailed for a limited time in select stores. The "hot honey" flavour trend has proven popular in both retail and foodservice, often paired with fried chicken offerings. Chick-fil-A's version features a fried chicken breast drizzled with honey and topped with pickled jalapenos and pimento cheese. 7. FLAVOUR UPGRADESMenu developers are exploring far out flavours ahead of the trend curve. Ingredients from all corners of the world are being incorporated in new builds or added to familiar recipes to bring a refreshing twist. Key regions for these new ingredients include South America, West Africa and Southeast Asia. Some of the emerging flavours identified are sazon, habanero pepper, fonio, yumberry, sweet lime and amba. 8. LATEST AMERICAN LAUNCHESWhile many food service outlets are trimming their menus to be more efficient in the face of new COVID regulations, there are some chains in the U.S. launching new items. Cotton Patch Cafe has introduced Chicken Fried Pork to the menu while Pizza Guys have a new curry pizza offering. Chopt have launched a few new salads made with Chipotle-spiced chicken and gochujang-drizzled beef and El Pollo Loco is selling a Chicken Tinga Burrito throughout autumn. 9. RESULTS OF EAT OUT TO HELP OUTAn analysis of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme reveals the last week in August was the most active in the foodservice industry since lockdown commenced in March, reaching 63% of the spending level seen at the start of the year. Approximately 11.5M eat-in trips were made by new customers (those that had not eaten out in July) during the month of August. The most active age group was the over-55 year olds and the most active meal eaten out was dinner.
