In April 2017 we had three people running for Rare Dementia Support and we would love this to grow.
Thank you! The Rare Dementia Support service is entirely funded by donations and your fundraising, so it is no exaggeration to say we couldn’t do it without you! Thanks to...... Kath Burrows who asked for donations in lieu of birthday gifts because of her friend who has FTD, and has raised over £750. Duncan Whale, Suzanne Whale and Nicole Judd who skydived in May and raised over £3,000 between them. In June, Samantha Talbot took on the Ramathon half marathon in memory of her late father, Barry, raising over £600 in total. In July Miles Blatter, aged 14, joined 80 other cyclists to ride 400 miles in six days from Hayling to Brittany, France and back. Miles has raised over £4,400 and has also received a trophy to award his very special achievement. Alex Greaves also cycled to raise funds for RDS, having just taken part in the Prudential RideLondon to Surrey 100. Alex has raised nearly £2,000. Chris Smith has worked incredibly hard over the past year taking part in a number of triathlons, duathlons and runs for RDS - PCA research. He has raised over £700 so far and has another trail run in October. Joining Alex in RideLondon to Surrey was Robert Hill whose wife, Beth, has semantic dementia and he has raised over £3,000. Congratulations to Richard Stribley as his fundraising was in the top 5% on JustGiving for July! He has raised well over £2,000 by cycling 204 miles in memory of his sister-in-law Hazel. An astounding £43,000 was raised at The Master’s Charity Ball at the Guildhall by The Worshipful Company of Butchers to be divided between the fund for Rare Dementia Support and the National Brain Appeal's Small Acorns Fund and Stroke Appeal. Earlier this year, regular supporter, Dafydd Gray held his annual charity night and raised £445 and then more recently, Nicola Harries organised a gig in Ongar, Essex and raised £350. Harold Chaplin raised over £400 at Hertford Music club from a guitar recital by Simon Watson. Finally, David Baddiel's latest run of ‘My Family – Not the Sitcom’ ended in June and RDS were fortunate to receive another £1,180 of donations, collected after performances. The collection was also shared with the Alzheimer’s Society and The Unforgettable Foundation. The RDS fund has now received over £5,000 in total from money raised with David’s support. Good luck to.. On 8 October, this year's London marathon runners, Mark Bentley and Jo Smith are taking on another challenge - the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon. They will be joined by Dr Jon Schott who will become a professor of Neurology at UCL in October. Come along and support our RDS team! We will be at the 6 and 9 mile mark and at the charity area at the end of the race. You can sponsor any of our supporters who have signed up to take on challenges at bit.ly/RDSfund World FTD Awareness Week 24 September – 1 October 2017 This September countries across the globe will observe World FTD Awareness Week. FTD support organisations in at least 10 countries will collaborate on many exciting events and outreach activities. We want to encourage people affected by FTD, family caregivers, dementia care organisations and the wider community to unite and embrace World FTD Awareness Week. Rare Dementia Support will be holding an 'Evening of Music' on 28 September to mark awareness week at The Hub,Wellcome Collection. If you would like inspiration for organising your own event for World FTD Awareness Week, download a copy of our fundraising pack or email for a postal pack complete with fundraiser sash, balloons and, if you are taking on a challenge such as a run or cycle, a vest or jersey. Created Out of Mind Created Out of Mind are a Wellcome funded team of scientists, visual artists, musicians, broadcasters, carers and clinicians aiming to explore, challenge and shape perceptions and understanding of dementias through science and the creative arts. Through two research themes: People and Perceptions and In the Moment, they seek to provide a platform for lived experiences, inform new representations, and develop tools and methodologies to capture the impact of the arts for people living with dementias. The team work closely with Rare Dementia Support and their members join the researchers and artists in The Hub Wellcome Collection, to talk and participate in creative workshops. Director, Prof Seb Crutch was appointed to a new Commission on Dementia and Music, which explores the current and potential role of music-based interventions for people living with dementia.
