1. A year on high alert for African swine fever as death toll reaches 30,000 in North Sumatra

A report looks back on the situation surrounding African swine fever in 2019; assessing the impact the virus has had on the pig herds this years and what is to come in 2020. This comes as 30,000 pigs have died in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province as a result of African swine fever.

2. CDC reports dozens more people sick in ongoing E. coli outbreak linked to romaine

Three dozen more patients and two more states are officially part of an E. coli outbreak traced to romaine, according to a renewed public alert from the CDC.

Eleven months after the FDA found Listeria contamination at an Almark Foods hard-boiled egg production plant, the CDC is announcing an ongoing outbreak linked to the eggs. Illnesses began in 2017.

6. Canadians renew warning about Salmonella outbreak and raw poultry

Officials continue to warn people to properly handle and cook poultry amidst an ongoing three-year Salmonella Reading outbreak that has sickened more than 120 people in Canada with the same strain of the bacterium that hit people in 43 U.S. states.

8. Scientists document emerging risk from eating raw seafood

A team of researchers says a relatively new foodborne pathogen documented in a man who had eaten raw salmon before becoming ill is all the evidence needed to warn the public against consuming raw seafood.
