making a change...

The Makeway Lab is an arts and health initiative that provides access to innovative technology and participatory programs to improve the health and well being of people in need.

Hospital Makerspace

The Makeway Lab is equipped with digital design and fabrication technology such as, 3D printers, digital scanners, LEDs and cutters that participants can interact with, to learn and create interesting and useful things. The Makeway Lab aims to motivate and empower people; encourage participation; rehabilitation and healing; and potentially re-skill people to build and renew their enthusiasm for life.

Spiral Residency

The Makeway Lab will be located at Spiral Nambour through to September 2016 to investigate ways to enhance their resident programs using the digital design and fabrication tools.  Spiral is a not-for-profit organisation who provide an environment of self-determination for people with multiple disabilities on the Sunshine Coast.

Wheelchair hand grip for Em J

Using the Makeway Lab we're making a hand grip for Em J that she can hold when moving through doorways. Design #1, a desk clamp and 3D printed grip, worked okay however we need to re-position the grip and adjust the shape to better suit Em J.  Onto design #2...

Edgy Table

Spiral's woodworking team are building a coffee table using recycled timber. They were keen to experiment with the 3D printing process and asked for an edge to give the table a unique look! Here we are testing the corner section.

Art Program

A range of creative applications are being explored with Spiral's artists. Experiments include 3D printed block prints; scanned sculptural portraits; projected gobo/light designs. An exhibition of the artwork will be on show at The Old Ambulance Station during September 2016.
