Flying blind: Why the loss of the long-form census is bad for business

Flying blind: Why the loss of the long-form census is bad for business

The cancellation of the mandatory long-form census questionnaire has left a blind spot in Canada’s policy process and hampers the decision making capabilities of both government and business.

For the business community, the cancellation hurts its ability to monitor important variables that inform policy and investment decisions, such as labour force participation, educational attainment, language use, and migration patterns. This leads to both wasteful spending and suboptimal policy outcomes, hurting Canadian competitiveness and hampering the ability of firms to conduct business.

Read more on why reinstating the long-form census is a key business priority in the 2015 federal election.
