ICCC report confirms importance of natural gasThe importance of natural gas in keeping power prices down and reducing emissions has been confirmed by the Government’s Interim Climate Change Committee (ICCC) in their report on the challenges of reaching 100% renewable electricity. They conclude that moving completely away from natural gas would be enormously costly to New Zealand households and for little environmental gain. Instead, the ICCC recommends greater priority is giving to electrification of transport and heat processes. PEPANZ agrees with the report and it’s pleasing to see the Government does too, saying they will be flexible and careful to avoid major price hikes. Greenpeace protest criticisedPEPANZ has publicly criticised Greenpeace's building climb in Wellington last week, calling it "ignorant grandstanding." “New Zealand needs new sources of natural gas to keep electricity prices down and help decarbonise the economy,” says PEPANZ CEO Cameron Madgwick. “Greenpeace should be supporting exploration for natural gas given how it is helping replace coal and lower emissions all around the world. “Disrupting the public and wasting police time with dangerous stunts doesn’t help anyone.” Finalists announced for Deloitte Energy Excellence AwardsThe finalists for the 2019 Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards have been announced today, including the PEPANZ-sponsored Community Initiative of the Year.
