Happy Father's Day! Prayer to St Joseph for all the fathers

To all the fathers in the world: we sincerely greet, thank and salute you on this very special day! We could never thank you enough for the gift of life, the silent and hidden sacrifices and the gentle but firm affection and love you have for us.

On this day, we would like to entrust you to the intercession of St Joseph, the foster father of Our Lord. May you all strive to be holy Christian fathers, always present beside your wife and your and children, to faithfully love, protect, sustain, strengthen, educate, correct and provide for them, with an authentic Christian wisdom, strong arms, resolute will and firm but gentle heart, wanting always the best, and the true earthly and heavenly happiness for your wife and children. This we ask God the Father, model for all fathers in the world, from whom all fatherhood on earth comes.

TERM 3 WEEK 8   SEPTEMBER 5, 2018
OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents

A really good education for your children is based on a true partnership between home and school. I believe this is best achieved through the regular, open communication that partners have if their common interests and goals are to be achieved.

At its best, partners are also trusting friends who will not give nor take comments made as being intended to cause hurt, or damage to the partnership, but rather as ‘open’ communication. To attain their common goal, in our case a quality, rounded education for the students of OLG, families and the school must be honest with one another and work together.

Again, the best forum for this is the frequent chat we ask you to have with your child’s teacher.

Below are the details of a survey inviting you to anonymously put forward your thoughts about OLG. This is a valued source of feedback for the school which, over the years, has resulted in many changes to the way we do things. What would truly help is for respondents to provide, when the opportunity is given, greater detail on what we do well and should continue and what we need to improve and suggestions as to how.

The company conducting the survey for us suggests we should expect no more than a 30% response rate. Given this is about your children’s education, I would hope that every family would take the 15 minutes to complete the exercise.

Parent and Caregiver Survey (PaCS) – Parent Voice
As a parent, you are invited to participate in a survey about the school climate. You will be asked to indicate your answers by selecting the response that best describes how often each statement occurs. You will not be asked to enter your name and, therefore, your answers will be completely anonymous.

Completion of the survey is on a voluntary basis.

Your confidentiality
All answers will go directly to the National School Improvement Partnerships, where the results will be analysed for your school. Answers from individual surveys will NOT be reported back to the school. Staff of the National School Improvement Partnerships staff are bound by a Code of Ethics and follow strict professional conduct.

Use of the data
National School Improvement Partnerships will report the results to the school in an aggregated format so that individuals cannot be identified. To enable drill-down reporting, the information provided to the school will contain data based on background information.

Unless express permission is provided, neither the school nor any individual, will be able to be directly or indirectly identified in any publications. Individual responses will remain anonymous.

How to complete the survey
You will be asked whether you are completing the survey for an individual child or as a family. If the experiences of your children are similar, then responding once will suffice. If, however, your children are experiencing very different learning environments then you might want to complete the survey more than once for different children.

The survey contains statements about practices which could take place in this school. For each statement, you are asked to indicate how often the statement takes place.

There are no 'right' or 'wrong' answers. Your opinion is what is wanted. Please be sure to answer all questions.

Some statements in may be fairly similar to other statements. Don't worry about this. Simply give your opinion about all statements.

If you require more information or have any questions, please contact the NSI Team. Email: NSITeam@NSIpartnerships.com.au

Your time and consideration are much appreciated.

Given the renovations to the MPA, this year’s program is different to that of the past.

·         Grandparents, our guests, are asked to gather at the Church before 9.00am for a special mass.

·         From there they will move up to the MPA for morning tea.

·         Their eldest grandchild will come to them and so the tour will begin.

·         The art exhibition in the MPA is best left for your assembled grandchildren to walk you through after you have done the rounds of their classrooms.

In advance, I personally thank all those grandparents who will be making the effort to attend both the mass (demonstrating support for the faith development of the children) followed by the morning tea (community) and then the tour (the children).

Grandparent’s Day Art Exhibition

Free Outing for Children
Over the past couple of years the work of Sidney Nolan has been investigated by our year three and four art classes.  The children particularly love his iconic Ned Kelly Series.  This very famous group of masterpieces is currently on loan from the National Gallery of Australia and can be seen at The Art Gallery of Western Australia in Northbridge. The show offers our children a rare opportunity to view this renowned sequence depicting the story of the fabled bush outlaw.

I encourage each of you to take your children to view this free exhibition.  It is very child friendly and the gallery has created labels and discussion questions to engage children. I loved my visit and will be taking my grand-daughter during the holidays.

Fathers Day Thank You
Thank you all for attending the Fathers Day breakfast on Thursday morning. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Fathers Day with our school community.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers on Wednesday and Thursday. This event would not be possible with you. A big thank you also to the Pafumi family for donating the bacon. Also to those who kindly donated prizes.

As we had a lot of food left over, we decided to donate it to worthy causes. We donated food to Shelter WA and St Vinnies who were very appreciative of our donation.

You have all helped to make this another successful OLG family event.

Netball
Team 2 "Thunderstruck" took to the court on Saturday to play the first semi-final and came away with a great win over St Anthony's 23-17. The girls really stepped up to the challenge and are now rewarded by going straight through to the grand finals on 15th September at 11am. We wish them the best of luck.

Child Protection Week 3rd to 9th September  2018
Our Lady of Grace Safeguarding Officers attended the Child Protection Week Breakfast last Tuesday which is an official annual State event and is hosted by the Safeguarding Office. The Archbishop, Timothy Costelloe SDB, announced and presented the prizes to the winners of the Safeguarding Competition whilst recognising all entrants and thanking them for their participation.  The Archbishop also launched the latest safeguarding resource – a handbook designed for teenagers – Love, Sex & Relationships, The Basic Essentials for Teenagers.  This is a sequel to the Protecting God’s Children Handbook that was launched, and very well received, last year.  Unlike the first handbook, which is aimed at educating parents the new handbook is aimed at the teenagers themselves.  Copies of the handbook are available following the 9.30am Children’s Mass on Sunday.  There are a number of resources in regard to the Safeguarding Project available for your information, if you are interested please contact your Safeguarding Officers.

The Safeguarding Officers, Susan Roccheccioli, Joan Burke and Sue Wright will be hosting the morning tea following the 9.30am Children’s Mass on Sunday, everyone is invited so please come along and enjoy!

2018 MARIST CRICKET CARNIVAL
Newman College is honoured to be the host of the 2018 Australian Marist Cricket Carnival.  The Carnival will run from Tuesday, 4 December through to Tuesday, 11 December 2018.  Five Marist Schools from Australia will compete and 65 competitors will take part.

Tournaments such as the Marist Cricket Carnival can only be held because of the generosity of those families who billet visiting athletes and we thank those families who have already offered their support.  The financial implications of accommodating athletes in hotel/motel type accommodation would soon put an end to such competitions as for many families the cost of the trip would then be beyond their means.

We ask that the Newman Community rally and assist in accommodating visiting athletes as we endeavour to make this Carnival a success.  Having children on the 7 – 12 Campus is certainly not a pre-requisite for billeting athletes.  We would be delighted to accept an offer to billet from families with children on our K – 2 and 3 – 6 Campuses.

The responsibilities of the billet family include providing the athletes with meals, a bed, laundry facilities and ensuring that the athletes meet all the Carnival requirements. Billeting athletes is a wonderful and rewarding experience for both the athlete and the host family.  Perhaps one day your child may be fortunate enough to be selected to represent Newman College at a Marist Sporting Carnival and require the generosity of a Marist Family during their interstate stay!

If you are able to assist in providing a visiting athlete with accommodation during the Cricket Carnival please phone me on 9204 9444 between the hours of 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday.  I look forward to hearing from you and am very happy to answer any questions you may have with regard to the Billeting Programme.  An advertising flyer with an offer to billet form is attached for your convenience.
