FuturumThis is a magazine and online platform for 11-19-year-olds that aims to inspire the next generation into STEAMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths and Medicine) careers. It connects scientists, STEAMM organisations and university students with young people through articles, career guides and course guides. It provides a unique and practical resource for meeting Gatsby Benchmarks 2 and 4. Subscribers regularly receive access to careers resources, such as this downloadable employability wallchart. Network Rail Insight DayMore than 40 students benefited from a site visit to Network Rail’s depot in Bedford in July. The day featured activities and presentations from staff, as well a tour of the workplace. Students came away better informed about the opportunities and apprenticeships available in the rail industry. We hope to run more days like this in the future. Aimed at years 8 and 9, it encourages young people to think about the breadth of opportunities open to them in the world of work, and more specifically the NHS, so they are inspired and motivated to fulfil their potential. Eco-Innovators CompetitionCould your students be responsible for the next iconic piece of street design? The Government's Office for Low Emission Vehicles is looking for students aged 7-19 to create a design for on-street electric vehicle charge points that is innovative, iconic and beautiful, as part of a national schools’ competition. Entries must be received by 18 October 2019. Business Meetings in SchoolsJason Pritchard, our Enterprise Adviser supporting Sharnbrook Academy, came up with an excellent idea to provide students with an experience of the workplace without them leaving the school. He has started to hold his business network meetings at the school and selected students are invited to attend. Careers Leaders might like to consider providing their employer contacts with free meeting space in return for student attendance. New Enterprise CoordinatorsOver the summer we have been expanding the support we provide for schools and colleges. Careers Hub Luton has been launched and, as well as Luton, will also be covering Dunstable and Houghton Regis. Saj Rauf and Julie Lockwood, both from Luton Borough Council, will be the Hub Lead and EC. We have also recruited Alexis McLeod as the EC covering North Northamptonshire. Alexis will also be delivering the NCOP program for the University of Northamptonshire. Vikki Morton will now concentrate on supporting West Northamptonshire. Deb Foster remains the EC for Milton Keynes, but will also specialise in supporting SEND and alternate provision schools. Peter Rayner remains the EC for Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire, with additional responsibility for middle schools. All EC areas and contact details can be found on the attached sheet. Labour Market InformationSEMLEP has purchased a license to Careers Explorer, which can be used by our schools, colleges and Enterprise Advisers to access local and national labour market information. Find Your Future Careers PortalCentral Bedfordshire Council has developed a careers website aimed at anyone between the ages of 15 to 30. As well as local content, the site has links to the best, most reliable sources of information they have found to help users with important career decisions and job choices. Dates for your diaryMK Innovates This event on 11th & 12th October 2019 is a festival to celebrate and inspire careers in STEM. Held in Middleton Hall, Central Milton Keynes, the event is free and open from 10 am to 4.30 pm daily.
