September 22, 2021 House of Representatives Votes to Extend Government Funding Beyond September 30th DeadlineLast night, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5305 – Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act by a vote of 220 - 211. The bill includes a continuing resolution (CR) that would prevent a government shutdown by extending discretionary spending at fiscal year (FY) 2021 levels until December 3rd, 2021. In addition to keeping the government funded until December 3rd, the bill would also temporarily suspend the public debt limit until December 16, 2022, preventing the United States from defaulting on its debt. Finally, the bill also includes $28.6 billion for supplemental emergency assistance to areas affected by recent natural disasters and $6.3 billion for humanitarian assistance to Afghan refugees. The bill now heads to the Senate, and it must pass and be signed into law before the end of September 30th in order to avoid a government shutdown.
