Apply to be a ViVID Fellow! 

The Virtual Video-Based Inquiry for Development of Teachers of Less Commonly Taught Languages (ViVID) Project is now recruiting fellows for the 2023-2024 academic year. 

Join a cohort of practicing LCTL instructors in reflective teaching and peer mentoring! Did we mention that this is paid?? ViVID Fellow receive a stipend of $100/month for participation in the project. The final amount depends on the NLRC funding for this upcoming year, but we anticipate each fellow will receive $900-1000.

SLCTLS and NCOLCTL Highlights

NLRC members presented a colloquium and feedback session called "Introducing the National Less Commonly Taught Languages Resource Center" at the 2023 NCOLCTL Conference, held from April 21-23 in Chicago. 

In addition, MSU's long-standing collaborative symposium with the University of Chicago, the Shared LCTL Symposium was be held as a pre-conference event of the NCOLCTL Conference on April 20th. A recap of the SLCTLS panels are forthcoming on the SLCTLS website.

Creating Engaging Materials

Develop in-depth expertise for developing engaging online materials. Build a portfolio of 3-6 sets of materials in a variety of domains of your choice (vocabulary or grammar, reading or listening, and culture or pragmatics) for use in your online or hybrid courses. 

Summer session starts: June 5

 

Teaching the Whole Class: Technology for Differentiated Instruction

Leverage course design principles and learning technologies to facilitate proficiency development for class sections with heterogeneous learners (differing proficiency levels, heritage, abilities, backgrounds, etc.).

Summer session starts: July 10

PD opportunities and resources
 

Many of our fellow Language Resource Centers and National Resource Centers as well as some of our collaborative partners have their own professional development opportunities. This section highlights those opportunities.

  • CARLA has many summer institutes for professional development. 
    • If you are interested in their summer 2024 opportunities, keep in mind that there is a scholarship for LCTL instructors!
  • CERCLL is holding the International Conference on the Development and Assessment of Intercultural Competence in February 2024 - the call for papers closes July 21, 2023.
  • The Coalition of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools will hold a hybrid conference October 13-14, 2023, featuring the NLRC's own Felix Kronenberg as a plenary speaker! Registration is now open. 
  • The NALRC has summer institutes, focused on instructors of African languages.
  • The ACTFL LCTL Special Interest Group (SIG) is holding a webinar for members on Wednesday, May 17th about "Strategic Scaffolding to Maximize Language Use," presented by Catherine Baumann (University of Chicago)! The webinar is free for SIG members. (If you are a member of ACTFL, you can join as many SIGs as you want!)
