Rohingya refugee crisis: Scottish Government pledges £120,000 for emergency response

The First Minister has announced that the Scottish Government’s Humanitarian Emergency Fund is distributing £120,000 as an emergency response to the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya civilians have been forced to flee towards Bangladesh. 

This announcment follows on from a previous announcement that the Humanitarian Emergency Fund is distributing £300,000 to help support people left homeless following floods that ravaged South Asia.

UK Government joins Call to Action to end forced labour, modern slavery and human trafficking at the 72nd UN General Assembly

In September 2017, during the 72nd Meeting of the UN General Assembly, the UK Government joined 36 other Member States and Observer States who endorsed a Call to Action which represents a  commitment to end forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking, and the worst forms of child labour in our world by 2030.

This year all 193 Member States also addressed the 72nd annual general debate, on the theme “Focusing on people: striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet.” A timely theme, given last weeks two year anniversary of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

SNP condemn UK Government as arms sales to Saudi Arabia dwarf aid assistance to Yemen

The SNP’s International Affairs spokesperson has condemned the UK government after figures revealed that the UK government’s aid assistance to Yemen is dwarfed in comparison to its arms sales to Saudi Arabia by more than 18x in the same time period.

Members of International Development Committee announced

In September, The House of Commons agreed the appointment of members of the International Development Committee. Chris Law, the SNP’s International Development spokesman, is the only Scottish MP represented on the Committee. The new members will join Stephen Twigg, Chair of the Committee.

UK launches coordinating body for aid funded cross-government research

A coalition of U.K. government departments and research donors have announced the launch of a new coordinating body for aid-funded development research, to be chaired by the director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Professor Baron Peter Piot.
