The study, conducted in hepatitis B-infected mice, showed that fucoidan can activate the ERK signalling pathway to enhancing the production of type I interferon. This study highlights the potential use of fucoidan as an alternative therapeutic approach to hepatitis B infection. Fucoidan protects against kidney damage A recent study found that fucoidan can reduce the symptoms of kidney damage. In the kidney tissue of rats, fucoidan significantly increased protein kinase A levels via upregulation of surface OCT2 expression. These findings suggest a protective effect against uric acid nephropathy - a key risk factor for gouty arthritis, renal diseases and cardiovascular diseases. Fucoidan reduces lung tumours in mice New research demonstrates that fucoidan can cause apoptosis of lung cancer cells in vivo and in vitro. In mouse models, fucoidan prevented tumourigenesis and reduced the size of tumours in LLC1-xenograft mice. Fucoidan was found to induce TLR4-regulated reactive oxygen species and promote ER stress-mediated apoptosis, leading to the death of lung cancer cells.
