It's how we roll...

Happy Easter bowlers!  Easter represents different things to people. For some it's a religious celebration, for others it's a holiday weekend marked with colorful Easter eggs and a time to escape work and home life for a few days.

For bowlers, it's enjoying several ends on the green! The colourful eggs are swapped with colourful bowls, the egg hunt becomes the hunt for the jack... and they still escape from work and home life!

We're not sure where all the bunnies will be this weekend, but we know there are plenty of bowling events happening at clubs over Easter.   Click this link to find out what events are on.

News from the green...

West is best!

Date 28 March 2021
Our newest centre title holders are from New Lynn Bowling Club.  Their Women's Triples team is crowned Ryman Healthcare Auckland Women's Triples champions for 2021.

The windy conditions made the finals match tough going for both sides. Although New Lynn's perseverance paid off as they defeated Carlton Cornwall 16-15 in a thrilling last bowl win.   It is the club’s first centre title in a while - congratulations and well-done ladies, it was a fabulous effort.

Winning team - New Lynn: Paris Baker, Olivia Bloomfield and Hokimate Barton
Runner-up team - Carlton Cornwall:
Jo Cheng, Helen Blick and Estelle Hickey

David vs Goliath battles

Date 28 March 2021
Last weekend, at the Ryman HealthCare Auckland Men’s Singles, there was one particular player competitors kept an eye on - it was young bowls sensation Liam Hill.

Many in the bowls community know Liam. The 12-year-old who plays for Royal Oak comes from a bowling lineage.  Liam is showing maturity and skill well beyond his years, on and off the green.  Off the green, with his sportsmanship that many of his senior counterparts could learn from!  On the green, he is slaying his competitors in a David versus Goliath fashion - he is winning!

Liam won his three qualifying matches to progress through to the post section at Carlton Cornwall Bowls. Beating off Mick Botica (Mt Albert) 21-18 in round one.  He tussled with experienced veteran Kevin Morris (Pt Chevalier) to win 21-17 in round two.  His third win was a seesaw battle against Bryce Mackie (Ellerslie) 21-16.

Liam is now into the fourth round and quarter-final - his final opponent is Don Faifua (Auckland Bowling Club).

What a match this turned out to be.  Playing in blustering conditions that increased in strength throughout the day.  Liam was fast out of the blocks, settling into great lines and weight control to surge ahead 15-4.  Don slowly began to reset with some well-delivered bowls to upset Liam's rhythm.  The score closing to 15-14.

The pressure was on!  Liam held his nerve to score two.  Still, Don applied more pressure edging out to a lead of 20-18. The wind got windier, the crowd got more vocal.  Liam calmy bowled putting three bowls close enough to take the victory.  It was an exciting nail-biting match to watch.

This youngster notches up his fourth win to progress to Finals Weekend.  A fantastic weekend of bowls for Liam, we can't wait to see him play Finals Weekend, being held 10-11 April.
