Welcome back to Friday Flash!
Hello, ladies and gents, the 'Summer of Bowls' 2021 kicked off with a bang!
To see in the new year, we started with the Summerset National Singles and Pairs and hot on its heels Ryman Healthcare Open 2-4-2 Mixed Pairs. Hotly contested matches delivered upsets, we said hello to new champs while we bid a fond farewell to previous ones. If the starting two comps are anything to go by, oh my, we have an exciting 2021 Summer of Bowls ahead! A big
thanks to all the clubs, and the volunteers involved in hosting both the Nationals and the 2-4-2 Pairs. Both events have been highly successful.

Slip, slop, slap, wrap - be sun smart!
Kiwis love to get the most of the outdoors, especially in summer. As players or supporters of bowls, we spend a lot of time outdoors – so as the sun beams down on us all, remember to be sun smart! Seek shade whenever possible, wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing. Importantly reapply your sunscreen every two hours. Slip, slop, slap, wrap everyone, and don't forget to drink lots of water to keep hydrated.

Well done Patch! We’ve all heard the expression that age is just a number, not a barrier. And now we have proof! On 19 December, at Glen Eden Bowling Club the 1-5 Year Singles Championship was played. The final came down to Brian (Patch) Hughes, a 4th-year bowler vs Colin Ayris-Webster, a
2nd-year bowler. Keeping both lives intact, Patch won his first club title at the ripe young age of 79 years and 11 months. We’re sure that this is just the beginning and there’ll be more titles to come for our silver fox junior. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement Patch, and many happy returns on your 80th birthday, celebrated on 9 January.
Have a Go Day At the end of last year, St Heliers Bowls ran three 'Have a Go Day' events to attract new players and members. Promoting the events through social media, on the radio, and with poster drops to local businesses proved successful. Each event day attracted large numbers of people – all eager to 'Have a Go'. By the end of the three days, 10 enthusiastic partakers became members. ‘Have a Go Day’ was such a hit, St
Heliers is going to make it an annual event!
Len Davidson Memorial Bowls3Five
Rocky Nook held its second annual memorial tournament. Len a past-president, secretary, and club patron sadly passed away a month shy of what was going to be the Len Davidson 100th Birthday Bowls3Five! Three generations entered the event with the winner’s trophy presented by Len's daughter. Rest in peace dear friend, your comp is growing in popularity.
St Heliers Tuesday TriplesTuesday 12 January was a glorious day for bowls, a great start to the new bowling year. 22 teams representing seven Auckland clubs entered the Davis Funeral Homes sponsored tournament. There were plenty of good bowls played, with lots of enjoyable noise, and "oh no’s" amongst all the laughter. The best thing about the day was seeing four first-year bowlers enjoying the game. Thanks go to the skips.
Winners with four wins, 23 ends, and 45 points, Mike Rapson, Warrick Catchpole, and John Brown.
