November 2017 Our briefing to the new MinisterPEPANZ has welcomed new Energy Minister Megan Woods to the role and published a detailed briefing on how our industry can help the new Government achieve its goals. It details how the oil and gas sector can help grow the economy to benefit all New Zealanders and reduce greenhouse emissions through the increased use of natural gas. PEPANZ is arranging to meet with the new Minister and has also written to new Ministers and MPs. We are proud of our good relationships across the whole Parliament and will keep building on these. Taranaki Tour takes offThe PEPANZ team have hosted a team of officials from the Ministry for the Environment and MBIE on a two-day tour of the oil and gas industry around Taranaki late last month. We visited a Mangahewa wellsite, the McKee, Pohokura and Rimu productions sites and met with the Taranaki Regional Council and South Taranaki District Council. These regular tours are an important way of educating stakeholders on our industry and how we operate. Barque-ing up the right treeLots of media coverage over the last month for New Zealand Oil and Gas and their report into the huge potential of the Barque field off the coast of Oamaru. Over the life of the field it is estimated it could generate $32 billion for the Crown in royalties and taxes. PEPANZ has come out in strong public support of the study as showing the potential of our industry to deliver real economic and environmental gains. Our CEO has been widely featured in the media including interviews with Newstalk ZB's Early Edition Show and in newspapers around the country. Full speaker line-up for 2018 New Zealand Petroleum Conference releasedThe full list of speakers for the 2018 New Zealand Petroleum Conference has now been released with a world-class line-up. Over 50 speakers will address the three separate conference streams of Community, Commercial and Regulatory; Geoscience; and Technology and Engineering. Keynote speakers include: · Brian Sullivan, the Executive Director of IPIECA, which has a 40-year history of promoting good practice and knowledge to help the industry and improve its environmental and social performance · Kylie Cochrane who is Aurecon’s global lead for community engagement, and also chairs the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2). The conference theme is "Poised for Action, Ready for Growth" and registrations are now open. New book looks at resources debateA new book by a former Government mining manager analyses what it calls "a deep dysfunction in the way we talk about oil and mining." "The Ground Between: Navigating the Oil and Mining Debate in New Zealand" by Sefton Darby looks at the polarised debate that often occurs over natural resource development. It considers the big issues and suggests ways both sides can better understand each other and their different worldviews. PEPANZ is organising for Sefton to speak at a members even in the New Year and will keep you posted on the details.
