Webversion COMPETENCE IN PAPER NewsletterJanuary 2021 From the officeDear members and friends of ZELLCHEMING, We hope you had a pleasant and relaxing New Year and wish you a happy, healthy and successful New Year! Appropriate to the uncertain weeks ahead, I would like to quote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "Even from stones that are laid in one's path, one can build beautiful things". One thing is certain: We will continue to inform you about the association's activities once a month this year - and we are starting directly with good news regarding the further development of the main committee and specialist committee work: On December 2, 2020, the main committee, which connects the board, specialist committees and district groups, met for a virtual meeting. The guidelines and work structures of the technical and specialist subcommittees were discussed. The results will now be summarized in updated rules of procedure and a final vote will be taken at the end of January. Furthermore, three additional working groups are to be established during the first quarter on the following topics:
This will make the work in the main committee more agile and future-oriented. In this sense, a good start and best regards! Petra Hanke P.S. Once again, many thanks to our new company member Halle Karton GmbH for the support and delivery of the box for our haptic Christmas greetings! The pulp market received a positive rating as the agency expects hardwood pulp prices to recover from recent lows as overstocks normalize, and softwood pulp prices to increase due to improved demand. The rating agency also sees stronger demand from China following a likely ban on recovered paper imports from 2021. The rating agency also highlights that the sector will not add significant new pulp capacity until 2022, in contrast to containerboard and tissue expansions. Paper packaging as well as tissue were rated stable, characterized by price increases for corrugated board, coated and uncoated recycled board, and unbleached kraft board. Higher demand for e-commerce cartons will offset the loss of demand from non-essential segments of the economy, such as restaurants, according to the report, which was co-authored by Moody's senior vice president Ed Sustar. Commodity and specialty paper was also found to be stable, with demand for some grades of commodity paper expected to recover as some schools and offices reopen, offsetting the ongoing secular decline in newsprint. "Average prices for most grades of paper will be flat as idled capacity comes back online in line with returning demand," the report says. The report also forecasts increasing demand for paper-based hygiene products, such as specialty wipes, as well as paper-based alternatives that replace single-use plastic products. Drivers of the positive outlook include EBITDA increasing more than 4% due to higher corrugated and consumer packaging prices, partially offset by higher recycled fiber and transportation costs. Threats to the positive outlook include weaker product demand due to a resurgence of COVID-19 infections, leading to renewed closures and delaying a recovery in economic activity; weaker prices in several subsectors as supply reductions fail to keep pace with demand declines; a weaker housing recovery; and higher raw material costs. Regionally, Moody's outlook for the paper and forest products industry is stable in North America and Europe and positive in Latin America. Metsä Spring and Valmet build 3D fiber product pilot plant
"Our project is a good example of our role as a pioneering company. We have an ambitious goal to build a significant business based on the world-class expertise of Metsä Group, Valmet and several other companies. We use well-known, sustainably produced wood fibers as our main raw material and strive to turn them into first-class packaging while minimizing the environmental impact. Many new innovations will be developed and tested at the pilot plant, supporting, for example, our goal to replace plastic in various packaging solutions," says Jarkko Tuominen, project manager at Metsä Spring. The plant is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2021. From the membershipNew GETEC Park.Emmen focuses on CO2 reduction
The GETEC Group has set itself the goal of supporting its customers on their way to climate-neutral production and energy supply. To this end, GETEC offers various climate-neutral solution concepts such as its Waste2Value approach or Green Steam, which include the integration of new technologies and fuels. To this end, the industrial park intends to take advantage in the future of the joint investment plans of the three northern provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe, as well as various large companies, to expand the production and transport of green hydrogen. Plans already exist for the construction of hydrogen electrolysers at GETEC Park.Emmen. For the energy supply of the park, for example, a successive increase in the admixture of hydrogen in the energy production of the industrial park is conceivable. "Our long-term goal is to make GETEC Park.Emmen climate-neutral and thus create a beacon for the energy transition in Europe. In the medium term, we want to reduce the share of fossil-generated heat and electricity in the park by half over the next 10 years, thus enabling our customers to substantially reduce their carbon footprint," explains Udo Lackner, COO of GETEC Group. The new GETEC Park.Emmen combines all the capabilities of the previous Emmtec Industry and Business Park and offers the park's customers a fully comprehensive and service-oriented service portfolio under its motto EMPOWERING YOUR BUSINESS: Supply of heat, cooling, electricity or compressed air, laboratory activities, logistics, wastewater treatment and all services required for park operation - all from a single source. GETEC Park.Emmen combines 65 years of experience and expertise into a comprehensive production and competence cluster for the production and recycling of polymers. Covering more than 100 hectares, the park offers optimally serviced land and real estate with a logistically ideal location. AFRY commits to Science Based Targets InitiativeAs part of its mission to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society, AFRY is now committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). The goal is to raise ambition to address the global climate crisis and make AFRY a net-zero carbon operation. The scale of the climate crisis has become more visible than ever, prompting calls for more ambitious targets and decisive action. In this context, AFRY has now signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C - the highest ambition level of the Science Based Targets Initiative. To limit global warming to 1.5°C and comply with the Paris Agreement, it is critical that targets are science-based. "Aligning our emissions targets with science is business critical for AFRY. As our experts work around the globe to find sustainable solutions, it is also important that we lead by example and ensure that we limit our own impact on the climate and continue the journey toward net zero," says Marie Trogstam, Head of Sustainability at AFRY. Setting targets through the Science Based Targets initiative gives companies important guidance on how to reduce their emissions at the pace and scale that science suggests is necessary. Within two years, the targets will be reviewed and validated by the initiative's panel. During 2021, AFRY will begin designing a roadmap to become a net-zero company. The Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). From the networkPaper. Can do more!Just in time for the New Year, the Federation of Employers' Associations in the German Paper Industry (VAP) and the Association of German Paper Mills (VDP) are launching "Papier. Kann mehr!", a new magazine with an impressive circulation of 50,000 copies, aimed primarily at employees in the paper industry. The project originated from the VAP magazine "Papier + Technik" and the VDP magazine "Papier. Sind wir!" It is not without reason that the new title uses "Papier. Kann mehr!", the name of the VDP's current online campaign. The contents of the campaign can also be found in part in the new magazine, which offers a colorful range of topics from business, the world of work, innovations and culture with paper, which is intended to inspire all employees but also external readers. The offering is rounded off with news and personalia from the companies. As the magazine will initially be published only once a quarter, the two associations have set up an online platform in parallel, which will provide the contents of the magazine and additional information from the end of January. A newsletter can also be ordered there, which is closely linked to the VDP's social media activities. The magazine will be delivered directly to the homes of all employees in the German paper industry - provided their employers have agreed accordingly - or via the company. External interested parties can request the magazine from VDP Public Relations. You can object to the delivery of our newsletter at any time. Please click on the "Unsubscribe" button.
