DISNEYLAND FOR FOODIESDubbed a 'Disneyland for foodies', FICO Eataly World is located on the outskirts of Bologna. It is the brainchild of Oscar Farinetti, the entrepreneur behind Eataly, a global network of upmarket Italian food halls that has taken New York and a string of other major cities around the world by storm in recent years. Eataly World will feature 47 restaurants and bars, along with 22 gardens, farm animals and 40 production areas making everything from pasta to gelato. WHAT'S THE BUZZ ABOUT BREAKFAST?Breakfast/brunch is a hot topic in the Top 9 – it’s a dynamic area for food-to-go and increasingly casual dining operators. M&S CHRISTMAS SANDWICH MENUM&S has launched its 2017 festive sandwich line-up. This year’s collection includes the returning Turkey Feast as well as twists on traditional favourites such as the Turkey & Pigs in Blankets Sandwich and the Turkey & Bacon Cranberry Sausage Roll. Equally appealing newcomers are the Ham Hock & Golden Beetroot Piccalilli Sandwich and the Mustard-Crusted Rare Roast Beef (soft sage and onion roll filled with mustard crusted rare roast beef, which comes with a pot of crispy Yorkshire pudding scraps). Once again, the retailer is donating 5% of each sandwich sales to homeless charity Shelter. 4. MCDONALD'S BOLOGNESE BURGERNo Italian menu would be complete without a Bolognese dish, and that’s exactly what McDonald's is offering in its Indonesian market – the Bolognese Burger. The new burger consists of a standard McDonald's beef patty covered with tomato beef Bolognese sauce. Also joining the menu is the more adventurous Alfredo Burger - featuring a regular beef patty, creamy cheese sauce topped with scrambled egg. Check it out against a moving Italian landscape here >> This isn’t the only Italian-themed offering we’ve seen from McDonald’s, in UK there’s the Italian Classic while in Belgium the chain recently launched its Glorious Giorgio burger, filled with Italian ingredients pancetta, provolone and pesto sauce. 5. BAGELS OF POTENTIAL IN FRANCECould bagels be the next success story in France? Chains like American Bruegger’s, Corner Bagel and Bagelstein are increasing their footprint at quite a rapid pace. American Bruegger’s, specialising in New York-style bagels plans to increase its 42 locations to 200 in France and abroad by 2020. The US menu offers bagel fillings such as sliced brisket, pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo (Chipotle Brisket melt) and the Pastrami and Everything with thinly sliced pepper-coated pastrami cured beef, cheese, dill pickles with spicy brown deli style mustard. A study shows by agency CHD suggests that France ranks bagels 10th in popularity, but the growing enthusiasm for all things Americana shows promise. 6. IRISH GROWING APPETITE FOR GRAB 'N GOTakeaway/grab ‘n go food outlets now account for more than one third of spending in Ireland’s foodservice market according to Bord Bia. The Irish Food Board’s 2017 ‘Irish Foodservice Channel Insights’ Report found that demand for healthy food options and food-to-go trends are driving growth in food consumed outside of the home. The report found that quick- service restaurants, fast-casual dining and food-to-go accounts for 35% of consumer spending, whilst full service restaurants account for 12%. Irelands foodservice market, which consists of 33,000 individual outlets, is currently at a record value of €7.8bn, and with an annual growth rate of 4.9% it’s expected to reach €9bn by 2020. 7. WHOLE FOODS 2018 TRENDSWhole Foods has announced its projected top trends for 2018. These include Middle Eastern cuisines such as Persian, Israeli, Moroccan, Syrian, and Lebanese incorporating harissa, cardamom and za’atar. For Mexican food lovers the good news is that 2018 will have even more tacos than 2017. Street foods are continuing to stay on trend, but this year there will be more attention to ingredients and cooking techniques – like hyper-authentic cooking, using ingredients like barbacoa or heirloom corn tortillas. SANDWICHES TAKE A BITE OUT OF PIZZAA long established favourite and commonly quoted as the second largest pizza nation in the world, some 745 million pizzas were consumed by French consumers in 2016 (Gira Conseil) however this position of popularity is under threat from grab ‘n go items such as sandwiches (2.35 bn consumed in 2016) and burgers (1.2 billion). Similar to Germany, Domino’s plans to expand its store presence to 400 – helped by its digital ordering service which offers simplicity, speed, and customization. 9. KEEPING THE KERB APPEALLast month Kerb, a popular London street food hub, launched ‘the future of London Food’ panel series. In summary, the panel concluded that the future of street food is undoubtedly bright, but traders and markets must remain adaptable, innovative and passionate about the food they are serving in order to keep their proposition exciting. At the foodpeople event this week, they spoke of street food maturing – recognising it as a type of self expression, a way to live creatively, free from limitations.
