A PIZZA-MAKING ROBOTAfter years of toiling away on a robotic food system, Seattle start-up, Picnic, has emerged with an automated pizza system that swiftly assembles custom pizzas with little to no human intervention. The bot can easily turn out up to 300 12-inch pizzas an hour when in full operation. A traditional pizzeria typically produces approximately 250 pizzas per day while the bot provides consistency and labour saving. Attendees at CES, the innovation convention where the new system was unveiled, are now considering Picnic’s invention a solution to the current labour problem in the restaurant industry. 2. ECO CHANGESTaco Bell is set to adapt all consumer-facing packaging such as the wrapping around tacos or the to-go box to make them all either reusable, recyclable, or compostable within the next five years. The company will also install recycle and compost bins in all restaurants. Beginning in May, Asda stores in Middleton and Leeds will be the first UK locations where shoppers can fill their own containers with a range of products such as rice, cereal and pasta. Asda also brought forward commitments to make a third of their plastic packaging on its private label products from recycled sources by the end of this year and reduce its plastic use as a whole by 15% by February 2021. 3. GUZMAN Y GOMEZ EXPANDGuzman y Gomez, a Mexican fast casual restaurant, is set to open their first U.S. location in Chicago this week. The brand now operates 135 locations, mostly in Australia but also in Asia. as American-born owners realised the gap in Mexican offerings in those regions. Customers can customise their order of burritos, nachos and tacos offered with meats such as pulled pork, chicken and steak. The brand proudly states that every meal is prepared in under four minutes through an assembly line style like Chipotle’s and with the speed of a McDonald’s. Internationally, they also introduced drive-thrus and drone delivery, lending to the success of providing customers with Mexican food fast. 4. DOMINO’S HIT THE STREETSDomino’s Germany are taking inspiration from international street food with the launch of their new pizza offerings. The latest range, full of street food flavour combinations includes a BBQ Pulled Beef, Chicken Kebab and Garlic Gyros. In Belgium, Domino’s have mastered traditional flavours for their new menu items with Vol-Au Vent flavoured pizza, combining a crispy base, creamy sauce and the optional deluxe addition of seasoned meatballs which are also available on their own as a side. 5. SUPERMARKETS EVOLVESupermarkets are capitalising on the shift of consumer behaviour towards wanting greater choice in-store, particularly with the rise in popularity of international cuisine. Asda is expanding their ‘Food for Now’ initiative by partnering with innovative brands such as Sushi Daily and Subway. Customers can also pick up a pizza from Asda’s kitchen concept to eat in store. IGD noted such transformation of underused space in large stores to create mini food halls and restaurants chains launching spin-off grab and go concepts to suit consumer needs. 6. V FEEDS THE SENSESV in Los Angeles has a fast-casual dining ethos while offering diners a unique multi-sensory experience. One of the founders comes from Livit, a Swedish company that creates tech-forward spaces, working with some Burger King and YUM! brand locations. While V serves food from breakfast to early morning at the weekend, their top menu item remains their Genovese-style pizzas. The custom pizzas are cooked in a digitally operated oven that customers can alter when ordering. V binds style with substance at their perfectly crafted social space which makes guests feel comfortable yet gets them in and out in record time. 7. 2 SISTER’S NEW LEADERPoultry processor, 2 Sisters Food Group, have announced the appointment of Richard Pennycook as new chairman following the retirement of Lord Allen after 9 years with the business. Lord Allen is credited with positively steering 2 Sisters since its acquisition of Northern Foods in 2011 to become a diversified manufacturer. Pennycook is described as a ‘retail industry heavyweight’ from his previous experience leading Co-Op and The Hut Group. He will take over 2 Sisters in early 2020, bringing a wealth of experience and fresh ideas to the company. 8. RISE OF DELIVERYGreggs has decided to partner with Just Eat for nationwide food deliveries with delivery in Bristol and Birmingham starting this week followed by other cities in the spring. The delivery service is already available in London, Newcastle and Glasgow and a nationwide roll-out is expected by year end. Greggs has also announced they will be extending operating hours in some branches to try to capture the late evening market. In Asia-Pacific, virtual restaurants are expected to surge according to Uber Eats with over 1,000 virtual restaurants currently on their delivery platform. Food trends in the region vary from country to country such as preference for rice over noodles, American cuisine being popular in Japan and a total of seven eating occasions per day in Taiwan. 9. NPD at NYP New York Pizza in the Netherland’s has introduced two new pizzas on their menu this week. Firstly, the appropriately named ‘Butcher’s Choice’ comes topped with salami, meatballs, red onion, sriracha mayonnaise and garlic oil. Secondly, the ‘Chicken Parmesan’ is a guilt-free delight with a cauliflower crust topped with red onion, peppers, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, chicken, parmesan cheese and garlic oil. New York Pizza also takes the decision away by creating a ‘Double Tasty’ featuring both of these new concepts on one pizza.
