ABP Thesis and Studio C,D, E Exhibition

The Melbourne School of Design will showcase a rich selection of work for this semester's Master of Architecture Studios at 757 Swanston Street from Friday 20 June.

Join us for the exhibition opening on Friday 20 June at 5.30pm in the Open Stage, 757 Swanston Street. The exhibition will take place across level 1, 2, 3, and 4 until 8 August. The exhibition in the open stage will close on 26 June.

This is a great opportunity to see the kind of work undertaken at the Melbourne School of Design.

Upcoming works in the Baldwin Spencer Building

Contractors will be undertaking redevelopment works  of the wireless network service in the Baldwin Spencer Building from Monday 23 June to Friday 4 July. During this period it is not anticipated that there will be any service disruptions to the existing wireless service in these buildings. A total of 26 new wireless access points across all floors is being undertaken. After the redevelopment is complete, you should notice an improvement to the performance and coverage of the wireless network.

Please be aware that cabling works will involve some noise including drilling, erecting ladders and working in the ceiling space. The contractors will do their best to keep noise to a minimum and complete all noisy works before 8.30am each morning.

Building Clear-Out

Students have until 5pm Friday 4 July to collect all work, models and personal belongings from 757 Swanston Street, Baldwin Spencer, 33 Lincoln Square South and the Frank Tate Building.

Anything left in ABP buildings after this date will be thrown out. Inside lockers will not be cleared at this time.

Spaces that will be cleared include:

  • 757 Swanston St: all teaching spaces, student print room, model making spaces, stairwells, on top of lockers
  • Baldwin Spencer: Student Lounge, teaching Spaces
  • Frank Tate: Level 1 Study Rooms, Informal Study Spaces, Level 2 Computer Lab Space
  • 33 Lincoln Square South: All areas of Level 1 MSD studio space, on top of lockers

Wine Culture Centre Architectural Competition

Wine Culture Center Architectural Competition offers students and young graduates a chance to redesign Cantina Valpolicella's winery into an architectural manifesto. A place for culture, training and tasting; a facility open to those novices or experts who will to approach one of the most fascinating human expressions: wine.

The competition is promoted by YAC in partnership with Foster + Partners, 5+1 AA, The Plan Magazine, Bologna University, Rome University, Venice IUAV University, Santa Fé University and many other Public Institutions.

Skills Workshop - Rhino

This 3 day workshop will introduce and explore Rhino 5.0, a digital modelling software widely used by designers and architects.

The aim of the workshop is for participants to develop a level of comfort and competency in creating 2D drawings and 3D forms through the use of Rhinoceros 5.0.

The workshop will cover:

  1. Rhino interface and workspace
  2. Drawing, modelling and editing 2D curves, 3D surfaces and 3D solids
  3. Creating blocks and annotations
  4. Modelling and analysing 3D designs

Skills Workshop - Revit

Dates: 10.00am - 6.00pm, Monday 7 - Friday 11 July

This 5 day workshop will introduce and explore Revit 2014, a building information modelling software used by architects and engineers.

The aim of the workshop is for participants to develop a level of comfort and competency in modelling and presentation techniques through the use of Revit in a design environment.

Participants will learn to how to:

  1. Construct a basic 3D model
  2. Develop a 3D model with greater details
  3. Customise various building components and
  4. Produce various types of outputs of their 3D model for presentation

Governor-General's Prize 2014 now open

Closing date: 30 June 2014
Prize: total prize pool in excess of $10,000

The Governor-General's Prize is a prestigious essay competition open to Australian citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an Australian university.

Every year the competition is judged by a panel of distinguished individuals including a High Court Justice. The competition provides students with the opportunity to be further recognised for their academic skill, talent and research.

This year, the Governor-General’s Prize is supported by Reconciliation Australia, and the essay competition gives students the opportunity to choose from a range of questions relating to recognition of Indigenous Australians.

Essays should be 2,500 words in length and answer one of the six prescribed essay questions, which relate to law, politics, history and social justice.
