Adam Legge: Remembering Manmeet Bhullar

Adam Legge: Remembering Manmeet Bhullar

This past evening Alberta lost a great public servant, and a man I was pleased to call a friend. Manmeet Bhullar was killed on the QE2 highway after he stopped to help another motorist that had been involved in a crash.

While incredibly tragic, the fact that Manmeet was killed while trying to help another person seems exactly in keeping with the man I was privileged to know. While he will be remembered for a great many things, I will remember him most for his firm handshake, strong integrity and ready laugh.

Unpacking Alberta's Climate Change plan: Part I – Distilling the carbon tax

On Sunday, Premier Rachel Notley introduced an ambitious new climate change policy framework for Alberta. The framework includes a range of policy options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and incentivize investment and innovation in clean technology, including renewable energy and energy efficiency programs.

Over the next two weeks we will be posting a series of articles that will unpack each pillar of the new framework, and explain what these new policies means for business in our province. Our Director of Policy, Justin Smith, starts us off this week by looking at the new carbon tax.

Read our latest blog unpacking what the economy-wide carbon tax means for Alberta business.

Did you know a 1% increase in Canada’s literacy rate has the potential to generate $18 billion/year in economic growth? Yet, around 23,100 young children in Calgary suffer from low literacy skills.

As part of our ongoing work with Give to Grow to create a more literate workforce, the Calgary Chamber in partnership with Calgary Reads, Calgary Economic Development, Place2Give and the Calgary Public Library Foundation would like to invite you to help support early childhood literacy by volunteering your team to take part in the Give to Grow Reading Rally this holiday season.

Held in the gym of Keeler School, the reading rally brings up to 100 Grade 1 and 2 students together with special guests, volunteers, local businesses and educators to celebrate the joy and power of reading. Each volunteer reads stories aloud to two or three children, and every child who attends receives a bag filled with books to take home.
