1. 16-state beef recall over Salmonella outbreak with 57 illnesses

Raw ground beef is the probable source of a new 16-state Salmonella outbreak involving 57 illnesses, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday, along with a massive recall.

2. More frozen chicken recalled; Canada updates public health warning

Ottawa-based Loblaw Companies is recalling $10 Chicken Fries due to possible Salmonella contamination, based on findings from an ongoing Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation into foodborne illness outbreaks that have sickened hundreds of people over the past year and a half.

3. Campylobacter and Salmonella behind most outbreaks in Germany

Almost 400 foodborne outbreaks occurred in Germany last year, according to a report. Most outbreaks with high evidence were caused by raw milk.

4. Ham products recalled for listeria; one death reported

USDA said Johnston County Hams, in Smithfield, N.C., is recalling about 89,096 pounds of ready-to-eat ham products that may be adulterated with listeria monocytogenes. The agency linked the recall to four illnesses, including one death.

6. FDA to Publicly Disclose Retailers on the Receiving End of Recalled and Contaminated Food Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued new draft guidance that will help determine when it is necessary and appropriate for retailers to be publicly identified when a food recall or outbreak is underway.
