1. Questions and controversies over role of Mexican papayas in rare outbreak strain

Late this past Friday afternoon, the CDC stepped out to warn many Americans not to eat Mexican-grown papayas out of fear the imported fruit may have Salmonella Uganda contamination.

2. Livelihoods of millions in East and Southeast Asia at risk from Swine Fever epidemic

The rapid spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) across East and Southeast Asia is threatening the food security and livelihoods of millions of households in the region which rely on pig farming. Globally, ASF is likely to drive industry-wide reform, with restaurant operators being warned to brace themselves for a protein price increase across the species.

3. Pig ear recall follows multistate, multidrug-resistant Salmonella outbreak

At least one recall has followed the July 3 announcement that federal and state officials are investigating contaminated pig ear dog treats that are likely responsible for a multistate, multidrug-resistant Salmonella outbreak. More products could be recalled.

4. EAT-Lancet diet's protein requirements ‘nutritionally inadequate’, says sustainability campaigner

5. Vegetables recalled in US due to Listeria, and plastic contamination in Chicken Nuggets results in a recall in UK

Saying state inspectors found Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of an unspecified fresh vegetable product, Growers Express LLC launched a recall of Green Giant and other brands of products from various retailers in dozens of states.

6. Manitoba braces for rising PEDv toll

Canada’s Manitoba province is experiencing an uptick in cases of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) that is tracking with outbreak levels in 2017, the province’s worst-ever year for the disease.

7. Germany bears brunt of Hepatitis A outbreak linked to dates

Almost 40 people were part of a hepatitis A outbreak in Germany linked to dates from Morocco last year while France, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Sweden reported 18 cases between them.
