TERM 2 WEEK 3 MAY 16TH, 2018 OUR LADY OF GRACE NEWSLETTER PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Interschool Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all the children in our swimming team on both their performance and behavior at last week’s carnival. It was lovely to witness the way they cheered and clapped not just their team mates but other worthy performances as well. The manners and courtesy of our students never fails to delight. Their swimming prowess is well known and they did their very best to continue that tradition. Half way through the carnival they were in the lead and it came down to the last race of the day to decide the overall winner of the carnival. This year OLG came second to St Brigid’s, Lesmurdie and I could not have been prouder of them. Final Preparations Under the leadership of Sister Joseph, our Year Six Confirmation candidates have taken part in day-long retreats with a focus on revision of knowledge and preparing mind and spirit for the big day. These retreats would not have been possible without the active support of parents and class teachers. Next Monday afternoon, Emeritus Archbishop Hickey will visit speak with all our candidates in the church at 1.30 following which the children have a rehearsal for the following week. Collection of School Fees at OLG Below is a quote from our school’s policy on this matter. Activities in the Pipeline · Engaged Communities - Planning OLG involvement in Community Engagement workshops in late June · Tuning into Kids – Developing emotional competence is a crucial step towards successful socialisation of children. Realising there was a gap between research and practice on this topic, Dr. Havighurst and Ms Harley turned the research behind emotion socialisation into an extensive, evidence based, parenting program – Tuning in to Kids®. At OLG our teachers will do “TiK for Teachers” but we would also like to offer interested parents the opportunity to do the parent version. Places will be limited. · Language Development in 3 and 4 year olds - A presentation for interested parents delivered by Speech pathologist, Michelle O’Donnell. · CCTV was installed this week · Enterprise level, school-wide Wifi infrastructure will soon be installed. · Seeking excellence. Michael Griffin will deliver a compelling and Inspirational presentation to all our Year 5 and 6 students which will reinforce OLG’s aim to provide students with a clear direction for intrinsically motivated, confident, enjoyable, and ultimately more successful, learning. · Consideration of five in term swimming lessons through a company such as Kirby Swim which operates with a ratio of one instructor to 3 or 4 children as opposed to our current model of ten lessons in groups of 10 or so. Investigation in to this continues.

Sunbeams and Rainbows 2018 The ‘Sunbeams (for pre-schoolers) and Rainbows (for primary school aged children)’ programs commence here at OLG in Week 5 this term. The programs are designed for children who are grieving and trying to cope with traumatic loss or painful transition in their lives. ‘Rainbows’ has been an integral part of the pastoral care at Our Lady of Grace School since 1997. The program will be conducted in small groups with children from Years K-6 meeting weekly for twelve weeks during school hours. Through ‘Sunbeams/Rainbows’ children are helped to verbalise their feelings, build a stronger sense of self-esteem, dispel their worries, and rise out of their pain over the changes in their family. They are no longer alone with their grief when they gather with other children who are facing similar situations. Children in the ‘Sunbeams/Rainbows’ program are guided through the grief process by trained facilitators. If you think your child would benefit from participating in ‘Sunbeams/Rainbows’, please complete the form and return it to school as soon as possible. For any enquiries please see Sr Joseph. P & F Acknowledgements - Mother's Day A big thank you to Carly Thomson, Lisa Kelly, Amanda Doherty, Scott & Jasmine Sullivan and our wonderful massage ladies for ensuring all the mums who came along to our Mothers Day ‘Garden Tea Party’ were truly spoilt with a delicious selection of food, beverages, and door prizes. We hope everyone that attended enjoyed their morning and the opportunity to relax and catch up with new and familiar faces. Judging by the big smiles and excited chatter, the OLG Mother’s Day stall was a big success amongst all the children this year. A lot of thought went into choosing the gifts and we hope that all the mothers enjoyed their special Sunday. We loved hearing about all the stories of the mums, and her likes and dislikes. To coordinate this stall takes 12 months of planning and can’t happen without the help from our community. We would like to thank Juliet Taylor and Lisa Kelly for helping to wrap the hundreds of gifts, and Eva Papotto for helping out at the stall. We can’t wait to get shopping for next year! The Mother's Day stall provided a great experience for the kids to choose their special gifts. There were so many presents for the children to choose from this year and all beautifully wrapped and presented by Begum Hamilton and Sheralee Allen. Well done ladies! “OLG Run for Fun” is a free running club where kids of all ages and fitness levels can come together before school to run and exercise in a positive and supportive environment. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to run with the kids and have fun. We all know running is a great way to get fit, but it offers so much more. Kids who exercise in the morning are generally more engaged and focused during lesson time. Running clubs enable kids to build friendships and have fun. Running builds healthy hearts and minds and brings joy to children. OLG Run for Fun is run by volunteer parents each Tuesday and Thursday morning during school terms and has now commenced. The more parents, the more fun! OLG Run for Fun will include some warm up activities and games and there will be a couple of running courses, of different lengths, around Charles Riley Reserve to suit different ages and fitness levels. There will be no free breakfast or awards - it’s just for fun. As the club is run by volunteer parents, students in Year 3 or below must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to ensure adequate supervision. A permission slip for all students must be completed before your child can participate. Permission slips will be available for signing at the first session your child chooses to attend. At Nutrition Force, we are seeing an increasing number of children for eating disorders and I wrote this article in response to a story I read on Humans of New York. I really want to reach out to families to remind them of the importance of communication at the dinner table and including children in the planning and preparation of family meals. Here is the link to the article http://nutritionforce.com.au/nourish-your-family/
We are also seeing more families with food insecurity so have reached out to some charities to link them with those who need help providing fresh food for their children. If any of your families could benefit from food assistance please feel free to pass them my personal details and I will direct them to the closest charity where food hampers and vouchers can be arranged on a regular basis. We acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Nyungar people, and show our respect for their ancestors and traditions. Our Lady of Grace School |
