I trust everyone has had a restful break and students are eager to continue embracing the opportunities offered at Kennedy. This term will continue to provide a wide range of opportunities for students across all Learning Areas and culminates with examinations for students in Years 9 to 12. Over the holidays Kennedy students participated in a mission tour to the Pilbara. It has been wonderful to hear the great stories about their experiences whilst away. Congratulations to both the staff and students who participated in this extra-ordinary opportunity. Congratulations to Mr Dunstan for his hard work in making the tour so successful. Uniform StandardsLast week a letter was sent to all families addressing our expected uniform standards now that we have returned to summer uniform. I would like to reinforce this communication by emphasising the importance of our dress standard on the culture of Kennedy. We have very clear expectations for standards of presentation, and they have been explicitly articulated to all members of our community. This also applies to our expectations for hairstyles. Whilst it is entertaining observing the styles of A.F.L. players, I would like to reinforce they do not have a place in the Kennedy standards. We expect that any hairstyle considered extreme
and not consistent with our guidelines will need to be corrected as soon as possible. Year 12 Last Day: Wednesday 20 OctoberNext Wednesday we will honour and farewell our Year 12 students at a special Assembly to acknowledge their last official day of classes at Kennedy. We wish them all the very best as a large number of these students commence their final preparations for the WACE examinations which will then be used for university entrance. This Assembly will also be used to present Year 12 academic and community awards replacing the Year 10 - 12 Awards Night. Year 12 Graduation will then take place on Friday 19 November after the WACE examinations. I hope all our Year 12
families can join us for both these special events. Year 11 Awards Assembly: Wednesday 3 NovemberOn Wednesday morning, 3 November we celebrate the achievement of our Year 11 students at their last Assembly for the year. This will be a formal service to present a range of awards to our Year 11 students and it would be wonderful to have as many families as possible joining us on the morning for this special celebration. Mr Mark Ashby Kennedy NewsKennedy Transform Centre UpdateWe love hearing from our Kennedy Transform Centre 32. The Centre is open but even though our kids can’t attend in person the staff continue to deliver thier objectives of education for our kids, and pastoral care for them and their families. Most notably, the kids have switched to online learning for the last seven months, attending their public school and Transform classes via Zoom or Telegram. There are some positive changes on the horizon. The Cambodian Government is rolling out a staged reopening of schools, with limits on numbers in line with social distancing requirements. Staff are also busy preparing and praying for our Centre to meet the criteria to begin welcoming our kids back. Thank you for your support. Please read the full article below and see more photos. From the Research and Study CentreThis year our theme is “Be kind to your mind – read!” Our Annual Champions Read program promotes reading for all Year 7 to 10 students. Yesterday students read for the whole of Extended Form and some even made use of our hammock display. (see link below). Time spent reading is recorded daily and contributes to the weekly tally. House points are awarded and contribute to the prestigious Kennedy cup competition. Please encourage your children to read at any time, but especially during Champions Read – reading is such an excellent activity for encouraging deep thinking, empathy, increasing memory, improving vocabulary – the list goes on!! Have a read yourself – Be kind to your mind – read! Term 3 Final AssemblyDuring our final Assembly for Term 3, we reflected on the success and growth of our students. Term 3 included a successful Community Open Day, Kennedy Day and two Athletics Carnivals. During the Assembly Mr Ashby thanked our House Captains for their commitment to the Pastoral Care vision, and acknowledged the many students who applied for student leadership roles for 2022. It is great to have so many students wanting to serve in leadership roles here at Kennedy. We also acknowledged and wished our Year 12 students all the best for their upcoming final examinations. New Australian Vaping ResearchHere at Kennedy, we always aim to keep our students and family informed. Curtin University respiratory physiologist Alexander Larcombe studied 65 common liquids used in vapes from local suppliers that are available in Australia. Dr Larcombe said the results showed that many vapes contained carcinogenic and other harmful ingredients. Researchers found pesticides, cleaning agents and potentially dangerous chemicals in vaping products. They also found trace elements of nicotine in products that claim to be nicotine-free. An independent researcher backed the findings as evidence of the need for greater regulation. We encourage you to read the full article from ABC News posted Monday 11 October 2021.
