You've heard about Earned Value but what about Earned Schedule? If you are using Earned Value, you must be careful with the SPI and SV metrics. When the planned scope is completed, its SV is 0 and SPI is 1, even if the project was delivered late. This is because if the work is done (regardless of how late), you have earned all its value. To measure Earned Schedule, we need to determine “when” the work was supposed to be earned -- at what point in time the current Earned Value (EV) should have been occurred? Earned Schedule (ES) is the point in time when the current earned value was to be accomplished. The PMBoK Sixth Edition contains a small new section on this. You can also read at http://www.earnedschedule.com/ Should I get PMP or Prince2 ? Opinion: While there is some overlap, they are in fact quite complementary. If you make Project Management your profession, I recommend that you understand both of these (plus Agile) as part of your methods toolkit. Which one you personally pursue is dependent on the industry, what your company has based its methods on, where in the globe you hope to work, and how much time you have to devote to the learning and study process.
The Scrum Framework - MisconceptionsIt has been surprising how many organisations have told us that they are using 'Scrum' yet are finding that 'it' is not working. This is often the result of misinformation & wrong expectations. Here are just a couple (out of many more) that have come up in the past few months -- 1. "The Scrum Master (SM) needs to be at the Daily Meetings" - False -- truth is that the SM ensures that a Daily Scrum takes place, but the Development Team is responsible for conducting the meeting. 2. "The Product Backlog has to be comprised of User Stories" - False - truth is that Scrum doesn’t prescribe nor require User Stories. Yes they can be useful, not not required. And the list of myths goes on .... more on my next update (feel free to contribute by emailing me). Assessing the Impact of change requests and issues In addition to other aspects that might be relevant to your unique environment, you should always assess the impact to cost, time, scope, quality, risk, and benefits! So often impact analysis does not incorporate the business case. Even if you can fund additional scope it does not automatically mean that it will bring more benefit. All project management frameworks including PMBoK and Prince2 incorporate the use of the Business Case throughout the project. Agile Certification CoursesThe Professional Scrum Master (PSM I)® certification is one of the most recognised and respected credentials in the Agile space. I thought I might highlight here a few points -- You can ...
When you change the way you deal with difficult people, they learn new ways to deal with you. Generally you want to avoid 'doing nothing' -- the best approach generally is to first change your attitude, then your behaviour.
Understanding the 10 behaviours often associated with 'difficult people' helps to change your attitude.
Stay tuned for my next news update where I provide tips for understanding some of these :-) (Partial) Source: Dr Rick Brinkman Other Courses Coming Up:
