If you are enrolled in summer courses at Pitt remember that the dates for things like add/drop and withdrawal are condensed. Please refer to the Registrar's website to confirm those dates.

Identity and Intergroup Relations Lab

In the Identity & Intergroup Relations Lab, we research interactions between members of different social groups (e.g., gay people and straight people, Black people and White people, etc.), what influences the quality of these interactions, and what we can do to improve them. We also research the outcomes that follow from these interactions, particularly for members of minoritized groups (e.g., disparities in health and wellbeing, identity threat, etc.). Current projects in the lab examine when and why people choose to reveal or conceal their stigmatized identities, and what the downstream effects of prejudice reduction interventions are for minoritized-group members.

The interdisciplinary PhD Program in Behavioral & Community Sciences at the University of South Florida is currently recruiting students for our Fall 2027 cohort, and we would appreciate your help in sharing this opportunity with students who may be a strong fit!

Since launching the program in 2017, we have enrolled over 40 highly qualified doctoral students and graduated 30 scholars. Our students engage in collaborative, mentorship-driven research. They leave the program with tangible professional accomplishments, including conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, grant proposals, and applied research experience.

The program is designed for students with strong research interests and ambitious career goals who are seeking an interdisciplinary training environment. Areas of faculty expertise include behavioral health, mental health, substance use, developmental disabilities, prevention science, community-based research, and related fields.

One of the strengths of our program is the close mentorship students receive from faculty advisors. Because doctoral training is highly individualized, applicants are encouraged to connect early with at least two faculty members whose research aligns with their interests. These conversations help students explore potential fit and identify mentorship opportunities prior to applying.
