Can Penile Implant Infections be Treated With Antibiotics?

Conservative antibiotic therapy may be a less invasive and less costly approach to treating penile implant infections, researchers say. But some experts recommend caution.

Typically, men with penile implant infections need to have the device removed with re-implantation at a later time. This strategy can lead to the formation of scar tissue and penile shortening, however.

Researchers in Saudi Arabia tried conservative antibiotic therapy with 37 men who developed infections related to their penile implants. The participants' average age was 58 years. Most of the men had had malleable prostheses implanted. The remaining four had inflatable implants. Each man underwent antibiotic therapy tailored to his needs.

The trial's overall success rate was 84%, the study authors noted. Thirty-one patients healed completely in about 7 weeks. These men could resume sexual activity.

Some experts warn that further study is needed, especially since it is unclear whether the men's infections were due to the implant itself or to a superficial wound. Also, malleable devices are less prone to infection.

Full details on the study are available here.
