Epiphany celebration at School

The Feast of the Epiphany, or the Three Magi, is to be celebrated at school on Friday, January 6, with Fr. Grecco blessing our classrooms, children, and staff.

The custom in Germany is a children’s festival from January 1 to January 6 (Three Kings Day). After a service at church, the children go from house to house to gather offerings for poor children in poor countries. They are dressed as the three kings and carry sticks with stars on the top. At the homes they sing songs and recite messages of Christmas. At each house they paint the letters "20+CMB+17," which stand for the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat (Christ bless this house). At the same time, the letters are the first letters of the names of the wise men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.

We continue this tradition by having the children gather in the halls and sing carols while the priest moves from room to room blessing everyone and the classrooms that are in daily use.

Notes from the Office

Cancellations and Delays

Sacred Heart follows the Pittsburgh Public Schools decision for delays and cancellations.  Check WTAE, WPXI, and KDKA for listings. An Option C alert will also be sent by phone and email.

Remember that on two hour delay days, if you are on lunch duty, school lunch begins 30 minutes later.  Report to the cafeteria at 11:40 at the latest. Students will be in their homerooms for indoor recess. Parents should walk from room to room and monitor the children. Students should use indoor voices, stay in their rooms, have no food or drink, and request permission for restroom or locker visits.

Tuition Payment Due

If you pay your tuition by semester, your second payment is due January 15, 2017.  If you chose to use the SMART tuition plan, please ensure those accounts are up to date as well.  Contact Laura Abinader  at the Parish Tuition Office for your current balance.

Parent Teacher Conferences

The monthly envelope contains a Parent-Teacher Conference Form.  This conference is optional, and can be scheduled with any of your child’s teachers.  Please return the form promptly if you would like to schedule a conference on January 26 or 27. Check the form for times. Report cards will go home on Tuesday, January 24th.

Returning to Sacred Heart

Please return the  ”Are You Returning to Sacred Heart?” form to the school office by January 18. One is required per child. The information is essential to planning for the next year.

Financial Aid Forms

PSAS (Private School Aid Service) financial aid forms will be available later in January. Both Catholic and non-Catholic families can apply for financial aid for the 2017-18 school year. The deadline is March 15, 2017.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week will be from Sunday, January 29 through Saturday, February 4. The national theme for 2017 is "Catholic Schools - Challenged to Proclaim God’s Mercy."

We invite all families to attend the 9:30 a.m. parish Mass on Sunday, January 29 to celebrate the many gifts God has given to Sacred Heart School; our children, parents, teachers, and parishioners. The Mass will be followed by a festive family brunch in the cafeteria. The registration form can be found in the monthly envelope.

As is tradition, parents are invited to join their children (preschool to grade 5) for breakfast in the cafeteria during Catholic Schools Week. The reservation form in the monthly envelope includes times and dates by grade.

A hard copy for events scheduled for the week will follow.

Mandated Reporter Training

Act 126 requires that all school entities, public and private, must ensure that all individuals who have interaction with children complete a three-hour mandated reporter training every 5 years.

The training is available through Pitt's Blackboard at:  https://reportabusepa.pitt.edu.  This training is made possible by the University of Pittsburgh, the Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth and Families, the PA Children and Youth Administrators and funding from the Children's Justice Act.

Please send Sr. Lynn a copy of the certificate you will receive at the conclusion of the training.   The certificate can be emailed directly to Sr. Lynn at slynn@sacredheartpgh.org.

Catholic Schools Week Family Brunch

This year the Family Brunch will be held on Sunday, January 29, at 10:30 a.m. (after the 9:30 a.m. Mass), in the school cafeteria.

All families are invited to come and enjoy this wonderful opportunity to celebrate our school and each other.

Reservation forms will be sent home in the January family envelope.  Please mark your calendars!

Children's Liturgy of the Word

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place on Sunday, January 8th during the 9:30 a.m. Mass for children in grades K - 4. Children are dismissed to the rectory library to listen to the Word of God with the daily readings on an age appropriate level. If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

First Communion family session

The First Communion Family Session will be held on January 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. All children planning to receive First Holy Communion in the spring and their parents are to attend. If you have questions, contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Family Rosary

Pope Francis has asked us to celebrate as a community a year dedicated to mercy. This Holy Year of Mercy is a time to help us rediscover the Church’s mission to bear witness to God’s love and the Gospel message.

We learn of divine mercy through Jesus’ passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension. In order to assist families to always be credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it daily, families are encouraged to come together to pray the rosary in church once a month prior to 9:30 a.m. Mass. Recitation begins at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday, January 8th. What a beautiful way for parents to lead their children (even the littlest ones!) to grow in love of our Lord through the eyes of Mary.

Confirmation retreat day

A retreat for 8th graders preparing to be confirmed is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th.  The retreat will be held at the Martina Spirituality Renewal Center. Students will be transported from school at 8:15 a.m. and return to school in time for dismissal. Lunch will be provided. If you have questions, contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Sacrament of Confirmation date

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at Sacred Heart on Thursday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. Most Reverend Bishop David A. Zubik will be the celebrant.  More information will be sent home later in January.

Kid's Night Out

Kid’s Night Out is an event for students in grades K-4 where we turn the auditorium into our own private movie theater! This year’s KNO will be held on Friday, January 13 for grades K-1 and on Friday, January 20 for grades 2-4.  Drop off begins at 6:45 p.m. and the show starts at 7:00 p.m. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase. Sleeping bags, pillow pets and pajamas are welcome and encouraged! Keep a look out for registration forms which will be sent home in early January. We hope your child can join us! Movies will be announced later.  If you have questions, email Jennifer McPeak at jlmcpeak@burnswhite.com.

Sarris Easter candy sale

The SHES Annual Sarris Easter Candy sale begins Monday, February 6th and runs through March 3rd. Profits from the sale help support many of the PTG sponsored activities held throughout the school year. We encourage the children to sell to family, friends and neighbors to mention a few.

We will be offering online ordering again this year. Online ordering is available for out-of-town friends and family.  Visit www.sarriscandiesfundraising.com  and enter the Sacred Heart Group ID:  10-1411.

For more information, please contact Danielle Cessna at mainierodj@hotmail.com.

Boxtops

Thanks to all the families who cut, clipped, saved, pasted and sent in Boxtops for Education.  The school received a check for $578.80 as the December payout. Keep sending in your boxtops! Every little contribution adds up to a wonderful bonus for the school.

January food: Rice-a-roni

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect Rice-a-roni to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Christian Leadership Team members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
