You are invited to join a Blue Plaque unveiling to commemorate the life and art of ex Walthamstow resident Madge Gill (1882–1961).

Raised at 71 High Street, she had a disjointed childhood and life of personal tragedy. It was these experiences that inspired her to begin making art, producing thousands of intricate ink drawings and embroideries. Although relatively unknown at the time she is now considered a prolific and powerful artist.

The blue plaque for Madge Gill, coordinated with the London Borough of Waltham Forest, will be installed on the building where she was born. The unveiling takes place on International Women's Day and will be the first blue plaque awarded to a woman in the borough.

The event will be held outside her flat, led by Cllr Clare Coghill. It will also mark the beginning of a series of events and exhibitions all about her life and work.
