Term 3 promises to be an exciting term with many major events on our term calendar. However, all the planning that has taken place will have to be reviewed as the COVID-19 situation is addressed and restriction phases change. Despite our detailed planning we will have to be flexible, agile and co-operate together to adjust to this continually shifting situation. I appreciate your support and co-operation as we all tackle this challenge together. As we start a new semester, I would like to reinforce the mission and values of Kennedy that maximize the learning experience at the College. Kennedy Baptist College endeavours to the very best of its ability to provide educational opportunities of excellence in a Christian context. In doing so the needs for lifelong learning are also addressed. All staff at Kennedy are committed to this mission through our Christian ethos and the values of Faith, Integrity, Boldness, Growth and Service. In the continuous pursuit of excellence in our teaching methods and strategy, we invited Dr Ian Lillico from Boys Forward to spend some time with us last Monday. He ran a session for staff and enriched them with practical information about understanding the needs of adolescents and how to engage them in their learning journey. In the evening he followed up with a session for parents, who learned how society is changing and how they can support their child as they navigate through the pressure and issues that impact their learning. Thank you to families who took the time to attend the event and learn about how it takes a village to raise a child. If you were unable to attend and would like more information and resources, please visit https://www.boysforward.com.au/ We look forward to sharing more opportunities during the Term 3 journey together. Mr Mark Ashby Chaplain DevotionWords are so powerful. They can be used negatively to cut a person down and leave internal wounds that can last for years. With equal force, words can also lift and inspire people to achieve things they never thought capable of. Parent's words are the most powerful words of any person on earth. More powerful than kings, commanders and teachers. How many times do we hear or say the phrase, “My mother always said…” or “As my dad would always say…” I have found as I have served young people for many decades, the words of parents have echoed in minds and hearts through generations. Because of the lasting power of words, it is good to speak words that leave a mark on a person’s day, character, or God willing, even a whole lifetime. Thinking about the words we speak is such a skill that many can learn but few make it a personal goal. Obviously, one word is always more than just one word. Is the word said with love or hatred, is the word offered or thrown, was the word gentle or hard? As we journey through life together, through challenging times, with stress and negative news all around, I would like to inspire our Kennedy community to make finding and speaking words of life a desired skill. Practice a skill until it is easy - until it is natural to find words that lift, inspire and grow. To finish, I want to share this word with you all. With the school holidays fast fading in the rearview mirror, the Kennedy campus has burst into energy and verve again. It reminds me of a word I have always loved bringing back into our vocab. Musicians may know the term 'con brio'. When written on a music score it means to play the music with energy, life and vigor. Please look to live the gift of life given to you with 'brio'. “A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.” Proverbs 18:4 Kennedy NewsParent’s Guide to TikTokIt seems like everyday there is a new platform or app drawing in teens. Once you, as parents, become familiar with an app, it seems that a new one pops up. It’s easy for parents to feel intimidated or “out of the loop” when it comes to TikTok or any new app but relax, you don’t have to be a technology expert to know how to help your teen safely use TikTok or any other app. Parents can manage access to TikTok and other apps rated 12+ through settings in Apple and Android devices. More information can be found on the TikTok Safety Center website but please see a helpful article by clicking the link below.
