Catching up with Mrs. Sears of Meadowdale High

By Jack Escherich, Edmonds High ’58 and Retired ESD Teacher

Liz Sears, or Mrs. Sears as she was known to many students, was raised in Cathlamet in Southwest Washington along the Columbia River. At the time, there was no road to the beach and people tended to move around the community by boat. Her family had no car. She shared an early memory of the town assembling on the football field to receive mail that was dropped from an airplane.

After graduating from high school, she went to the University of Washington with plans to study pharmacy. As life worked out, she found herself single with two children. She changed her goals and decided to go to Western College of Education to obtain a teaching degree focused on science education. Later, she went on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Washington.

Liz started her teaching career at Edmonds Junior High with Principal Harold Smith. There she taught general science classes and recalls one particularly challenging class of 8th-grade boys. She recalls Principal Smith’s routine of delivering your paycheck in front of the class and adding, “Don’t spend it in one place.”

In 1963, she moved to Meadowdale High School where she helped to welcome the first students to the new school. At the time, Meadowdale was a sleepy residential area that many considered to be “out in the country.” She has fond memories of Principal Ron Fraser who came to MHS in 1969. She described Ron as a personable, friendly leader who like to give you new assignments by casually swinging by and asking, “You got a minute?” When he left, you usually had a new assignment or a were now a member of a committee.
