DELIVEROO'S TABLE SERVICEDeliveroo is launching a new contactless dine-in tool to help restaurants reopen safely. From July 15, the new in-app function, “Table Service”, enables customers to read the menu, order and pay their bill via the Deliveroo app. Deliveroo will not be charging commission to their restaurant partners across the UK, thereby boosting business for those impacted by lockdown, and promoting safe social distancing for customers and staff. As part of a range of other safety measures, they will also be offering PPE on their packaging store such as masks, sanitiser and gloves. 2. SHAQ-A-RONI PIZZAPapa John's US have teamed up with their new spokesman, Shaquille O’Neal, to launch an extra-large pizza called the Shaq-A-Roni. The pizza will be supersized, just like the basketball legend himself, with double the mozzarella and pepperoni of a standard pepperoni pizza. The pizza, retailing at $12, is being promoted through a snapchat campaign experience, encouraging customers to scan the box for a 3D surprise. For every supersized Shaq-A-Roni sold, Papa Johns will donate $1 to The Papa John's Foundation for Building Community, to support COVID-19 relief, the fight against racial injustice, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, United Negro College Fund and general community involvement. 3. UBER EATS INITIATIVESOrders through Uber Eats have jumped significantly since the beginning of lockdown, skyrocketing by 160%. The number of new restaurants on its UK platform have doubled in the last four months, to a total of 17,000 providers, including fine dining restaurants who have also turned to food delivery to recover lost revenue. Uber for Business recently announced the launch of ‘Vouchers for Uber Eats’, which lets businesses customize their meal plans for employees and customers, whether it is an individual’s lunch or a 1,000-person virtual event. 4. TACO BELL'S NEW CHEESY LAUNCHTaco Bell has perfected the handheld blend of a grilled cheese and burrito. Their new Grilled Cheese Burrito has cheese on the inside and outside of the flour tortilla, generously filled with seasoned beef, rice, crunchy red strips, spicy chipotle sauce and sour cream. Customers are given the choice of swapping the beef for black beans. This indulgent launch is available for a limited time in select U.S. locations, following a successful market trial in November. The brand is also set to launch its Taco Bell Rewards Program later this month, allowing fans to accumulate loyalty points on each purchase. 5. WHAT IS THE UK CRAVING?With one in ten Brits ordering takeaway at least once weekly, it may come as no surprise that more than 50% already select their favourite restaurant before venturing online to order. Following almost 100 days of lockdown, many of the UK’s food service and pub hot spots will reopen their doors come July 4. Fresh Student Living took a deep dive to discover the nation’s most coveted foodie favourites. Not surprisingly, pizza and burgers topped the nation’s favourite cravings with Pizza Express, Burger King, Krispy Kreme coming in as the most searched fast food restaurants, followed closely by Pizza Hut, Subway, Nando’s and Domino's. 6. ALDI & LIDL STEP IT UPGerman discount retailer, Aldi, has started trialling its own grocery service in Ireland, in partnership with Deliveroo, following a successful launch in the UK. Customers will have the option to order over 140 Aldi items via the Deliveroo app. Orders are packed by Aldi staff, with deliveries made by Deliveroo couriers in as little as 30 minutes. A €5 service charge applies, with minimum orders of €25 required to avoid an additional €5 fee. In similar news, the Schwarz Group, parent group of fellow German discount retailer, Lidl, has recently acquired Real.de. As one of the largest online marketplaces in Germany, it offers Lidl the platform to expand its online offerings to German consumers. 7. SPENDING IN PUBSDespite alcohol stores seeing a rise in sales amid lockdown, consumers are eager, albeit cautious, to get back to their favourite drinking establishments. A survey indicates around 35% of adults will return to pubs within the first week and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) estimates about 6.5 million trips to be made on opening weekend, from 4th July. Spending is expected to be 32% higher than previous expenditure due to pent-up demand and potential price increases. New social distancing and time slot measures are also forecast to have an impact on operations and overall sales. 8. PIZZA HUT RAMEN FUSION Pizza Hut Taiwan have added another adventurous pizza mashup to their menu with the launch of the Ramen Pizza. The new concept was co-created by Pizza Hut and Menya Musashi, a popular ramen restaurant chain from Toyko. The pizza is topped with almost all the ingredients found in a Tonkotsu ramen (pork bone soup), including thick wheat noodles, barbecue roast pork, bamboo shoots, red chili peppers, green onions, cheese, and a soft-boiled egg. The new Ramen Pizza is currently available and is thought to be the first ramen to be eaten by hand. 9. CLIMATE CHANGE GOALSIndustry leaders are seeing this time as an important phase for refreshing ways of doing business to expand on greener, more sustainable opportunities. Major retailers, including Amazon, M&S, Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl and Ocado, signed a BRC declaration to develop a roadmap towards tackling climate change. In addition, large organisations in the meat industry have teamed up with the shared objective of reducing food waste. Improvements in forecasting, packaging and storing are some of the many tactics towards cutting down the £3 billion worth of meat going to waste each year in the UK.
