Advent

The Advent Season is a time of prayer and anticipation during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. The liturgical season begins the new church year on Sunday, December 1. Use this special time to focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

The entire school will assemble in the auditorium on Friday, December 6 for our Advent Prayer Circle. Half of the student body will pray at 9 a.m. and the other half at 9:45 a.m. Students in grade two will lead the children and teachers in prayer. Parents and friends of our school are invited to come and pray with us.

Family Christmas ornaments

As we prepare for the Advent season, we also prepare our Family Christmas Trees at Sacred Heart School. There will be trees on each floor of the school decorated with one ornament from each school family.

If you are new to SHES or haven't yet sent an ornament to represent your family, please send one by December. The ornament can be bought or homemade. It can be a Christmas, Chanukah, or winter ornament. Please put your family's name on the ornament, along with the year your family began at Sacred Heart School.

We use the ornaments from year to year to remember all who have been part of the school family over time. The children love to put their family ornament on the tree and proudly show it to their friends.

Veterans Day

Although children have a limited understanding of the meaning of Veterans Day and the assembly we have to honor veterans, they are in awe at the number of adults that attend the event and they take pride in their participation. I've never understood why some schools don't have classes on that day. It is such a 'teachable moment' in the lives of children. As they mature, they will remember the experience and come to a deeper understanding of the sacrifice for freedom it represents.

Sign up now to help with Cookie Walk

The Loretta’s Christmas Cookie and Candy Walk is a huge cookie, Christmas treat, and candy sale on Sunday, Dec. 15 in the school cafeteria. There will also be a Chinese auction.

Members of our parish and school community will bake many kinds of cookies and candy to be sold. To help make this a successful parish fundraiser we need your help. So many of our school families have wonderful baking traditions to share and we hope to represent as many different family traditions as possible.

Click here to sign up online to help with this wonderful parish fundraiser! If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Evans at 412-363-2557 or melissamcpeak.evans@verizon.net.

Visitor policy sent home in monthly envelope

As part of our ongoing attempt to keep the school safe during school hours, we have distributed in this monthly envelope a copy of  the Sacred Heart Elementary School Visitor Policy.

Please take a moment to read the policy. We anticipate your understanding and cooperation as we all work together to maintain these guidelines.

Don't forget to register siblings for next year

If you have a young child ready to be enrolled for kindergarten or preschool for the 2014-2015 school year, now is the time to send in your registration.  Acceptance letters are processed in January, so remember to let the office know about any younger siblings you plan to send to Sacred Heart next year.

Giant Eagle “Apples for the Students”

The Giant Eagle “Apples For the Students” Program continues through March 17, 2014. Each time your Giant Eagle Advantage Card is scanned, your purchases automatically earn free educational rewards for the school.

Sign up at www.gianteagle.com/about/apples-for-students or by calling 1-800-474-4777.  Holiday entertaining and feeding those college students home for the holidays might offer opportunities to earn perks for yourself and awards for Sacred Heart.

International Connections hosts get-together

The Sacred Heart community is invited to the next International Connections coffee at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4 in the Elizabeth room. As we enter the Christmas season, we ask everyone to bring a dish from a special family holiday or celebration in your homeland.

See you on December 4 for more great food, fun, and fellowship.

Please RSVP by December 2 to Ruth Bence and rmbence06@gmail.com or Melissa Johnson at melissajo9@yahoo.com if you would like to attend.

Don't forget to place holiday gift card orders

Orders placed on December 5 and December 12 will be available for December 19 pick-up.

Plan ahead for holiday gifts. This is a great way to earn credit toward your Family Assessment.

After Christmas, orders will resume on January 9 and continue each Thursday throughout January, February, and March.

Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament

As many of you know, the Sacred Heart Athletic Association hosts an annual basketball tournament every year from December 26 through December 30. It is typically our largest fundraiser and absent a snowstorm (as we experienced last year), the tournament is typically a huge success.

While only some Sacred Heart teams participate in the tournament, the proceeds benefit all children who play any sport at Sacred Heart. We ask for parents to volunteer to work the door, concession stand, keep the clock, set up, clean up, make food or bake goods to sell at the concession stand, and so on.

If your children are playing in the tournament, we expect each family to volunteer for at least two shifts during the tournament. If your child is not playing in the tournament, and you can give a few hours over the Christmas holiday, we would be very grateful.

There will be a volunteer website monitored by Greg Rubinoff, SHAA Treasurer (greg.rubinoff.shaac@gmail.com) and volunteers will be solicited and coordinated by Kim Moses, SHAA secretary (kimbermoses@gmail.com).

If you have any questions or would like to help, please contact either of the above or Michele Cromer (SHAA president) at mcromer@gtnlaw.com. Thank you!

Skate show features 2 Sacred Heart students

A Holiday Skating Show and open skating session will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. December 8 at Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

Skating performances will showcase the talents of the RMU Island Sports Center's figure skating academy, skating school, and synchronized skating teams. An open skate with Santa and cast members from the show will follow.

Tickets are available in advance for $7. Show day tickets will be $8 for senior citizens and children 12 and under and $9 for all others.

For more information, call 412-397-4454.

December's food: Rice

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect rice to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
