An Update (Finally!)

I can't believe December arrived, and it's been nearly four months since my last update. Just a reflection of how fast the world has come back to life I imagine. 2021 has been a tremendous year of study and growth for me. I’ve been participating in New York's premier (virtual) art salon "Yellow Chair" for the past 18 months, and have pushed my artistic boundaries farther than I could imagine, reaching beyond representational drawing to explore the limitless world of abstraction.

This work is big and can get messy (!), so a couple months ago I moved into a new art studio at 6th Street Studios & Art Center in historic downtown Gilroy. It’s wonderful having such a big space to create while supporting downtown and a local arts-focused non-profit.

It was also exciting to get back to real live in-person exhibitions including the premier Los Angeles Art Show with Gallery 1202, the Supermarket Art Fair with ArtCan in Stockholm, Sweden, and the incredible Art on Paper exhibit in New York City (also with Gallery 1202).

Many of my new works have been inspired by the forests of Northern California where I have spent lots of time with my family and my fearless (except for the wind) German Shepherd, Dakota. I am so intrigued by the visual cues tucked deep in the forest, the hidden language, the energy, the spirit. So not only did I tackle a new genre, but in some ways a new narrative.

And of course my “day job” of running the award-winning design agency Articulate Solutions has also ramped back up over the last year. I’m so proud to work with the best creative team on the planet—and to finally get back to seeing them and our supportive clients in person again. We are all very grateful to have our feet under us.

Most of all I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, and that the coming holiday season brings you happiness and time to rest, recharge, and reconnect with all the people you value most. And here's to a prosperous 2022!

"Love Remains" Ink and oil on acid treated cardboard | 9”h x 19”w (2021)

“I am captivated by wind rustling through the branches; there are stories in that sound. And too in the patterns of the bark, and the ancient marks on massive stones, the simple decaying needles on the ground, the tiny beetle trails on fallen 200-foot-tall trees. How could I not be obsessed standing in the middle of that canopy, gazing up, asking who held this place before, and what message did they leave for me in that universal memory?” — Katherine Filice
