Remote Teaching

In these unprecedented times we are all facing new challenges and new demands. The response from across the University has been fantastic.

Colleagues from Academic Development, along with colleagues from Curriculum 2025, the Disruptive Media Learning Lab and the Learning Enhancement Units have been pulling together resources to support this work.

This newsletter provides an opportunity to take stock and remind colleagues of the great set of resources that are available – and which continue to be developed.

We have also included some examples of the work that is going on across faculties and subsidiaries.

With the move to online teaching being new to many staff, teaching observations are a good way to share practice and help develop your own capabilities. The newsletter also provides details of an alternative teaching observation form for online teaching.

In addition to the resources and support outlined in this newsletter Academic Development colleagues can be contacted for support. Do get in touch using acdevunit@coventry.ac.uk.

Remote Teaching and Assessment

This new page in the Academic Development website includes a collection of useful links to resources available to staff needing to teach remotely, alongside with alternatives to face-to-face assessment and online workshops to support you in remote teaching.

There are a few suggestions of how other universities are approaching their emergency remote teaching.

Remote Teaching | Online Support Sessions

In order to provide the opportunity for staff to gain experience with remote teaching, Academic Development have been running a programme of webinars to provide guidance. The webinar topics are:

  • Webinars – creating great learning experiences
  • Sharing engaging recorded sessions
  • Assessing students online
  • Supporting students' online assessment journey
  • Generic questions about teaching online

The aim of each webinar is to enable staff the opportunity to develop confidence and ownership in an online environment.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have run around 35 webinars and attended by around 200 staff. We are supporting our internationals partners too, having participants from different countries as Australia, Oman, Russia, Dubai...

There are still places available on future webinars if you want to attend. Feedback from the sessions run so far is provided to the right. Find more details about times and slots available on on the booking system.

“I enjoyed the informal, relaxed approach. Being able to demonstrate while in a webinar was great. I haven’t run a webinar before but feel more confident to try moving the sessions we provide online.” [Participant]

"I am new to Screencast-O-Matic so it was very helpful to see how it works." [Participant]

"We have a group presentation in one of our modules, so I am now thinking about if/how that can be adapted, ie. switch to individual presentation recorded and uploaded to Moodle perhaps, so it was good to get some tips on this."  [Participant]

"Thanks for the amazing and helpful session. I liked particularly the part where you explained how we can keep track of student feedback." [International Participant]

Examples of work across faculties and subsidiaries

FAH

Academics have used a wide range of remote teaching tools including Microsoft Teams for tutorials, Moodle discussion boards and social media. Moving students’ artefact-based projects to online assessment has been a challenge that FAH staff and students have adapted to quickly.

A number of MS Team sites have been set up for staff-to-student interaction as well as for Course team communications.  Resources about remote teaching and online assessment are on Moodle and staff have been sharing ideas and tips, as well as engaging with webinars offered by Learning Technologists and Academic Development.

If you would like more information contact Claire Simmons (ab3238).

HLS

Academic staff in HLS have utilised the support provided through Moodle, Learning Technologists and Academic Development to facilitate the transition to remote teaching and learning. The focus has been on building simple online learning packages.

Moodle pages have been set up in HLS schools to support academic staff and to facilitate sharing of information, ideas and suggestions as staff get to grips with a new way of working.

MS Teams sites have also been set up to connect course teams, new starters, course directors and staff-student groups.

If you would like more information contact Gail Forrester-Gale (hsx286).

CU Coventry

Academics at CU Coventry have used MS Teams and Big Blue Button on Moodle to transition to online teaching and learning.

Teaching Enhanced Learning specialists have offered numerous workshops to support all teaching staff on up-skilling on various digital tools. Reader friendly guides have been created for easy access on Sharepoint and CUCMoodle.

In other areas, Moodle's 'structured label' to create opportunities of micro learning as part of asynchronous teaching.

For areas where assessment is based on tests and exams - all paper based tests have been converted to online versions

If you would like more information contact Amrita Narang (ab8725).

Online Teaching Observations

As our practice has moved online there is a teaching observation form designed for use with this mode of delivery.

This provides an alternative form which may be more suited to your teaching practice over the next few months.

This form may be submitted as a Coventry University Management Led Teaching Observation form.

The observation should be carried out by someone with either Fellowship or Senior Fellowship and who has attended the Academic Development training for management led observations.
