Annual Appeal

The Monsignor Keene Activities Building has been a hub of activity in the life of the school, parish and East End community since 1958. This year’s annual fund will assist with the important and long overdue need for ventilation upgrades and improvements that will make a difference long into the future.

Current students and alumni have been able to use the facility to learn sports skills, including tennis, basketball and volleyball through clinics and in team practice. Sacred Heart home games have been and continue to be played there, and many a Diocesan championship was celebrated on this attractive home court. Student Council activities, middle school dances, pep rallies, Scout meetings, the After-School Program, the adult bowling league, and the SH parish Women’s Guild have all benefited from the community spaces.

The Annual Fund for Sacred Heart Elementary School provides an opportunity for you to give back today and help support the project of the much needed Ventilation Upgrades and Improvements.  Be sure to read more about the Annual Fund in the attractive appeal brochure which was mailed to alumni and sent to school families via the Family Envelope.

PTG Nominations

We would like to welcome nominations for the 2016-2017 Parent Teacher Guild (PTG). Please feel free to nominate yourself or someone else. We will check with nominees before putting them on the ballot.

Nominations can be submitted using this online form. The form includes more information about open positions: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DLRS3JY.  Nominations are due by May 13, 2016.

Our PTG is more than just a fundraising committee; our key mission is to promote an environment at school where teachers and administrator can do their best work and our children can do their best learning.

Research shows that students whose parents are involved in their education have better grades, fewer discipline problems, and greater interest in school.  Volunteering also makes it easier to get to know teachers and other parents.

Please contact either of Beth Sutton or Jane Cavanaugh if you have any questions.

Kindergarten graduation front row seat raffle

First grade here we come!  The Sacred Heart PTG will be raffling 2 sets of 6 front row seats for the May 27th Kindergarten Graduation.  Chances are $5.00 a piece or 5 for $20.00.  Look for a flyer with more detailed information in the family envelope.

Kennywood day

Sacred Heart’s annual Kennywood Day is Friday, May 20th.  Tickets go on sale Thursday May 12th and the cost is $30.00 a ticket.  Only cash will be accepted and tickets must be purchased by an adult.  New this year, the Sacred Heart PTG will also be offering souvenir t-shirts for sale as well.  Look for a flyer with more detailed information in the family envelope.

Schoolkidz

This year, our school is participating for the first time in the SchoolKidz Teacher Tailored School Supply Kit Program.  It is an easy and convenient solution for parents to meet the back-to-school needs of our students.  Kits are available to order online for each grade, filled with the specific school supplies requested by our teachers.  Kits are personalized and include a sheet of name labels for each child.  And everything is delivered directly to school so students are ready on the first day.  Pricing is below retail, saving you money.  And each kit gets your child a chance to win an iPad Mini.

Best of all, the program eliminates the aggravation, time, and hassle of running store-to-store to find all of the items that you need (and a lot that you don't!).  More than that, you can also order other supplies at discounted prices during the sale -- backpacks, lunchbags, water bottles, and more.  A portion of the proceeds of this sale will benefit the PTG.  Look for a flyer in this month's envelope, or order online at www.shopttkits.com, school account #8630.  The sale begins Monday, May 2 and ends Friday, June 17.  Contact Amy Raslevich at araslevich@gmail.com  with any questions.

Sacred Heart Summer Camp

A flyer for summer camp at Sacred Heart went out last month and the registration form is found on the homepage of our website here.  Two camps are available.  “Creative Kids” focuses on students entering grades K through two next year.  “Adventure Days” is geared to students entering grades three through five.  Camps run for one or two weeks from June 7 through June 17.  Take a look and consider having your child kick off their summer here at Sacred Heart School. Friends and fun await!

Uniform Exchange

This time of year, many of us notice that our children’s pants are a little (or a lot!) shorter. Since we’re so close to the end of the school year, it doesn’t make sense to pay full price for new items when there are so many to choose from in our uniform exchange. It’s a great resource for Sacred Heart families. Located in the snack bar area of the cafeteria, it is chock full of jumpers, skirts, shirts, blouses, polo shirts and pants and shorts.

And with prices ranging from $1 to $3, you can’t go wrong. There is a sign in the room listing prices and an envelope system for payment. Simply pick out what you want, put your payment in the envelope and drop it off at the office.

Remember when you stop to browse, you can also drop off any uniforms that may not fit your child anymore. Please be sure that they are clean and in good condition with no tears or stains.

Finally, we’re always in need of pants’ hangers (metal or plastic with two clips), so if you have any you can spare, please send them to the school office. And we always appreciate help keeping the room organized, so consider staying an extra 15 minutes at the end of a lunch duty shift and hanging some pants or shirts.

Continuing to keep child safe online

The Children's Internet Usage Study, a study of children's online behaviors, was conducted in partnership with Booz Allen Hamilton and (ISC). The Study reveals that parents are not as in tune with what their kids are doing online as they would like to believe. Self-reported online behaviors of US kids in grades 4-8 were compared with their parents' perceptions of their behavior; and they didn't always match.

The findings show that kids visit sites their parents wouldn't approve of and engage with strangers online and offline more frequently than their parents know – despite receiving instruction on the safe use of the internet. This study gives us directional insight for updating and distributing our educational program.

The Center for Cyber Safety and Education remains committed to its vision of making the cyber world a safer place for everyone through its cybersecurity education and awareness program, Safe and Secure Online; information security scholarships; and industry and consumer research.

May food and food for summer months

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect rice to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

In the summer, the following food items are also being accepted:  macaroni and cheese, cereal and hamburger helper.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
