People with diabetes do face a significantly higher risk of dying with COVID-19 with a third of deaths in England associated with the condition, according to new NHS research. Published in the Lancet, the two world-leading studies led by Professor Jonathan Valabhji, National Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity at NHS England and Professor Kar, National Specialty Advisor, Diabetes with NHS England, have been looking in depth at the number of people who died from coronavirus in hospital also had diabetes. Ensuring a safe and systematic approach to virtual consultations will be one of the latest subjects of a webinar series. An international panel of experts in the field of diabetes and endocrinology have come together to provide practical recommendations for the management of diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidance has been drafted to give healthcare professionals an insight into “potential mechanistic links” between coronavirus and diabetes, while also providing practical management recommendations, and will “elaborate on the differential needs of several patient groups”. Healthcare professionals treating people with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and COVID-19 must consider additional safety concerns, the National Inpatient Diabetes COVID-19 Response Group has warned. The organisation, supported by ABCD, which represents consultant diabetologists, has issued guidelines on its website reminding clinicians that people with type 1 diabetes who are taking SGLT-2 inhibitors (Dapagliflozin, Empagliflozin, Canagliflozin and Ertuglifozin) are at risk of developing DKA during any intercurrent illness. Innovative approaches to diabetes care and management will be explored in an upcoming webinar discussion hosted by Roche Diabetes Care. The event will be held during Diabetes Week on June 11 from 18:00 to 18:45, and will showcase international examples of best practice in diabetes care. Key opinion leaders have been lined up to host a series of webinars to further understand the educational needs of healthcare professionals in relation to COVID-19 and diabetes. The online workshops have been launched as part of the new Diabetes Professional Care (DPC) Digital Hub, which also brings together the latest guidelines, toolkits and videos. All the content is free to access, although users must sign up to take part in each webinar. A leading type 2 diabetes professor has developed a Risk Reduction Framework for NHS staff who may be at risk of COVID-19. Professor Kamlesh Khunti, Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester, headed an expert working group that led to the publication of the document.
