From the editors...

The staff newsletter is produced every fortnight by the Internal Communications team so we can share news, announcements, selected events and some requests for help. 

If you wish to communicate around the University, the newsletter is just one way to do that. Please check our Methods of Internal Communication webpage, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

Athena SWAN - School of Humanities

Dr Martine Van Ittersum is now leading the School of Humanities Athena SWAN self-assessment team as the School works towards its award application in April 2017. For more information, contact Martine.

Free online course - Care & Compassion: Getting it Right

A free online course for health and social care practitioners, students, service users and volunteers will launch at the end of October.

The course is open to anyone interested in how care and compassion is delivered across the health and social care spectrum, offering an enjoyable and enlightening professional development opportunity. With 15 hours of learning over 5 weeks, this course will enable you to learn with experts in the field and have the opportunity to share insights from your own practice and the experience of others.

Key Travel Webinars - Traveller Toolkit

Join Laura Paton (the University’s Key Travel Account Manager) for a webinar designed to help staff who book or undertake travel to become familiar with features available to make travelling as easy as possible.

The webinar will navigate the online booking tool, the “Look No Book” feature, and traveller profiles. The 24 hour emergency number and procedure, along with the mobile travel app, will also be discussed.

Mental health awareness

Have you seen the new black dog statue on campus? Wondering what his story is?

Disability Services has made a donation to the charity SANE, who campaign to reduce the stigma around mental illness - so Horace is here on loan until February to help raise awareness.

The University is also raising awareness of mental health through the Dundee Literary Festival programme (notably, Seconds to Snap,  Mind Your Head and A Fresh Look at Death), while DUSA's Minds Matter campaign continues for a second year. 

DJCAD PhD Students shortlisted for prestigious award

Two DJCAD PhD students, Valentina Bonizzi and Kieran Baxter, have been shortlisted for a prestigious Arts and Humanities Research Council’s 2016 Research in Film Awards. Hundreds of films were submitted for the Awards this year and the overall winner for each category will receive £2,000 towards their film-making.

Valentina's and Kieran's submissions were incuded in the twenty-five films that have been shortlisted across five categories in the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s 2016 Research in Film Awards.

The winner for each category will be announced at an awards ceremony at BAFTA in London on Thursday 10 November - good luck to Valentina and Kieran!

Medical and Dental School artists create interactive 3D content

Medical artists from the Medical and Dental Schools have taken their 3D models and collaborated with teaching staff to create informative interactive content with Sketchfab - a free online hosting site for 3D content.

Sketchfab was showcased in a UoDigital event earlier this year - watch the video online.

Developing Forensic Science at Dundee (21 Oct)

This year is the 129th series of the Armitstead Lectures, featuring six consecutive Friday nights in the autumn, open to the public, covering a variety of topics including some of local interest.

The next lecture will come from Professor Niamh Nic Daeid with a focus on Forensic Science - Developing Forensic Science at Dundee, New Directions and New Horizons.

Community Harvest at the Botanic Garden (22 Oct)

A day of celebration for Dundee Urban Orchard's first community harvest with apple pressing, storytelling, music, dance, art-making, community stalls, talks, and more! If you have your own apple tree then please bring apples for pressing.

This event is free and everyone is welcome. Food and drink will be available to buy from the Botanic Garden Cafe or, alternatively, you can bring a picnic.

Love books, film and theatre and want to write about them? DURA is recruiting new reviewers. If you haven't reviewed for them before, drop in and find out more; if you're currently reviewing for them, put a face to that email and meet the editors! 

Join the drop-in on Wednesday 26 October 12.30-1.30pm in 1.36 Baxter Suite, Tower Building.

Stammtisch (German Society) meetings

The first Stammtisch (German Society) meeting took place last Tuesday and continues every second Tuesday throughout Semester 1. The get togethers take place at 8pm in Braes, Perth Road, with the next meeting being held on Tuesday 25 October.

The organisation of the Stammtisch group has been taken over by Lois Pace and Rachel Jordan

Islamic Society
Charity Week

The Islamic Society's Charity Week takes place from Monday 24 October until Sunday 30 October with a whole host of events lined up, including bake sales and five-a-side football. Charity Week's goal is to raise money for orphans and under-privliaged children around the world, under Islamic Relief.

The Islamic Society invites you to the International Food Festival & Afternoon Tea in aid of #CW2016

Experience exotic tastes from around the world in this culinary expedition, and sip on delicious tea brewed from across the globe. All proceeds go towards orphans and under-priviliged children across the globe.

CASTLE
Referencing for your students

The CASTLE Academic Skills team can provide advice and guidance on how to reference written work. Students are encouraged to get it right each time, starting by familiarising themselves through their Module Handbook with their own discipline's system of referencing and researching.

Part-time artist positions on art-science project

Professor Sara Brown (School of Medicine) has funding for two artists to work part-time on an art-science project and would like to encourage staff and students to apply.

Research fund vouchers available

Dr Andrew Symon (School of Nursing & Health Sciences) would like to sell surplus vouchers which were bought for a research study. There is £480 worth of ‘Love-2-shop’ vouchers available (in £10 and £5 denominations), with an expiry date of 31 March 2017.

Testing the temperature in the Dalhousie Building

How do you feel about the temperature in the Dalhousie Building? Too hot? Too cold? Make sure you take Estates' temperature survey (two kiosks will be located in the foyer) before it closes on Friday 4 November. 

DJCAD short courses and workshops survey

Christina Fuehrer is currently placed within the School of Art as part of the Ambitious Futures graduate scheme, and her project (on behalf of the management team) involves evaluating the feasibility of summer short courses and other evening workshops. She has created a short survey to find out if staff would be interested in such courses.

Katie Hannah is investigating art as a hobby for her honours dissertation about Art Therapy. If you are creative in any way and enjoy art, please help Katie by completing the survey.

Geraldine Donnelly is a fourth year Textile Design student currently researching natrual dyeing for her dissertation. She would be grateful to anyone who would complete her survey.

Neuroimaging study - avoidance in anxiety

James Raymond (University of Edinburgh) and Professor Douglas Steele are running an MRI study in the School of Medicine and need to recruit people who are cool, calm and collected. The study involves a decision-making task and a brain scan. Volunteers will receive £20-30.
