We're loyal, not just local.

Hello,

We seem to have made it through winter relatively unscathed, although we'll keep holding our breathe as it isn't over yet! As we move towards spring the warmer weather and growth it can bring has its own problems for our pets. More time to get outside and play, more walks with the family, but for some it means fleas and allergies. In this edition we look at the different types of skin conditions and watch outs for your cat and dog.

For those close to our Amberley clinic we have our team of fabulous Vet Nurses available for appointments. Read on below for how this team can help if you have questions regarding dietary requirements, your pets behaviour, dental and more!

Thank you from the Team at North Canterbury Vets.

    Spring, Pollen and Skin Diseases

Spring is nearly here, pollen is starting to appear and once again we prepare to see an influx of skin cases presented.  The skin is the body’s largest organ and can account for nearly a quarter of a pet’s bodyweight. Acting as a waterproof protective barrier the skin is highly sensitive and can suffer from up to 160 different conditions. Up to 25% of pets seen at a vet practice will have some degree of skin disease.

Signs your pet may have a skin condition

It is normal for all cats and dogs to scratch sometimes, just like us it’s natural for them to want to scratch at areas of dryness, irritations from collars or the occasional insect or debris caught in fur, but when this scratching becomes obsessive or is causing further damage to the skin it is something that should be addressed.

Patient Profile: Dave the Golden Retriever

Recently we had some concerned owners bring in their very cute but very sick puppy, Dave. His condition had deteriorated quickly and his gums, mouth, eyes and ears became blistered, swollen and sore. Difficult to watch in any animal. Our team diagnosed him with Puppy Strangles, a rare autoimmune disease. They quickly administered treatment and after just a week he is now a different dog. You can see the difference in the two pictures shown below.

In Louise's (Dave's owners) words "a special shout out to vet Charlotte and nurse Rebekah for their incredible care, prompt diagnosis/treatment and follow-up. You guys are the real MVP’s of pet health!". We love success stories like this.

    Allergic to cats?

There's some 'good mews' for cat allergy sufferers. A vaccine has been developed which may put an end to itchy eyes and sniffly noses every time Fluffy graciously gives in to a cuddle. This vaccine is still a few years away but will hopefully help the 1 in 10 humans that are believed to be allergic to cats.
