SEAWEED-COATED TAKEAWAY BOXESJust Eat is expanding its trial of seaweed-coated takeaway boxes in a mission to reduce plastic and stop 30,000 plastic coated boxes from entering the waste stream. The boxes are lined with a seaweed and plant composite while the cardboard container is made from trees and grass pulp with no synthetic additives. The takeaway box has been designed to be water and grease proof without an impact on the end consumer. The second phase of the trial will commence with 11 restaurant partners across the UK after a successful first trial last year. 4. SOARING MEAT SALES IN THE USAMeat sales increased 19.2% year on year to $82.5 billion in 2020, according to The Power of Meat 2021 report. Beef accounts for the highest share of sales and consumers sought out value-added meat either pre-marinated, pre-cut or pre-seasoned. Consumers look for easy-to-prepare meals as they experiment with flavour to combat food fatigue. This surge happened even as flexitarianism increased from 10% in 2019 to 19% in 2020. Chilled plant-based meat sales increased almost 84% in 2020 to $475.3 million but remains relatively niche at just 10% household penetration. 5. PICCOLINIS PLANT-BASED PIZZASGerman pizza manufacturer, Wagner, has introduced two new plant-based pizzas as part of their Original Piccolinis range. The BBQ Chicken-style pizza features Plant Deli soy strips, peppers, red onion and BBQ sauce while the Spinach Creamy-style pizza is topped with spinach, onions, garlic sauce and sunflower seeds. One pack contains nine mini frozen pizzas and is labelled with a Nutri-Score as Wagner recognises that consumers are becoming more conscious of purchases on a nutritional and environmental level. 6. WHAT'S NEXT FOR FROZEN FOOD?Frozen food sales grew 13.8% in value and 11.5% in volume over the course of 2020. Its resurgence shows that consumers are looking for easy, comforting meals that do not compromise on taste or quality. Growth in this category was driven by the convenience of frozen foods and value for money. Since the new year, there has been an increase in consumers looking for eco-friendly frozen foods, in relation to packaging and plant-based ingredients. 7. DINING OUT IS THRIVING IN AMERICARestaurant sales take off in the United States as consumers spend freely in recent weeks.
